Cannons Slip by Lizards

Boston, MA (August 2, 2007) – The Boston Cannons slipped by the Long Island Lizards 17-16 in front of 9,299 fans at Harvard Stadium in the Cannons final home game of the 2007 season. Mikey Powell earned Bud Light MVP honors recording 3 goals and 3 assists for 6 total points. The win improves the Cannons to 5-6 and drops Long Island to 4-7.

"It was important for us to get this win tonight for our fans," said Powell. "Cannons fans are amazing, without a doubt the best in the league. As a team we felt we owed them this win. It's been a great experience playing in front of the Boston crowd."

Tonight was not only the Cannons final home game, it was also Fan Appreciation Night. Powell scored the first goal of the game for the Cannons ending a 4-0 Lizards run. He registered 5 of his 6 points in the first half including a first quarter hat trick. Powell was named the Cannons Offensive Player of the Year during Boston's team awards ceremony at halftime. Defenseman Chris Passavia earned team MVP honors, Ray Megill was named the Rookie of the Year, Ben DeFelice picked up 11th Man honors and Jake Coon was named team Defensive Player of the Year.

After playing catch-up and then trading goals the Cannons didn't get their first lead until the 10:57 mark of the second quarter. DJ Andrzejewski put one home in his first game since returning from IR. Boston never trailed again though the game was tied on three more occasions including 16-16 early in the fourth quarter.

Matt Poskay had a big game for the Cannons finishing with 4 goals. Poskay started at attack for the first time in his Cannons career. John Christmas scored 3 times and added 2 assists. Andrzejewski and Tom Zummo both added two goals apiece.

Jake Coon and Kip Turner split time in cage. Both registered 7 saves. Long Island was led by Stephen Berger, 4 goals and 2 assists. Keith Cromwell and Blake Miller both added hat tricks. The Cannons finish up the 2007 season on the road next Saturday August 11 at Rochester.
