Denver Rebounds, Derails the Machine

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. - Making his Major League Lacrosse debut, goalkeeper Jesse Schwartzman made 16 saves, as the Denver Outlaws snapped a two-game losing streak with a 19-9 victory over the Chicago Machine at Toyota Park on Saturday evening.

The Outlaws jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the game's first eight minutes as midfielder Brian Langtry scored a pair of goals and added an assist during the spurt. After a goal by midfielder Doug Shanahan cut the Machine's deficit to 5-3, Denver scored four of the final five goals in the period to take a 9-4 lead. Attackman Brendan Mundorf tallied a pair of goals during the rally.

The teams traded goals to begin the second quarter before Denver used goals by Mundorf and rookie Scott Sowanick to extend their lead to 12-5 with 10:22 left in the period.

The Machine closed to within 13-7 with 3:27 left in the period before Mundorf and midfielder Lou Braun scored just 43 seconds apart to take a 15-7 advantage into the intermission.

Midfielder Jeff Sonke scored off a feed from midfielder Mike Law less than three minutes into the third quarter, upping the Outlaws' cushion to 16-7 before the teams traded goals to end the period.

Langtry scored his fourth goal of the game to begin the fourth quarter, an unassisted marker past goalkeeper Harry Alford to give Denver a ten-point advantage. The teams traded goals to end the game and give Denver the victory.

Schwartzman was named as the Bud Light MVP in his MLL debut by holding Chicago to just nine goals, including two in the second half. Mundorf and Langtry each scored four goals while Westervelt added a three-goal effort.

Shanahan led the Machine in the loss by scoring two goals along with an assist.
