BOSTON, Mass. – Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional lacrosse league, announced Monday its weekly award winners for the week ending July 1, 2007, according to MLL Commissioner David Gross. Boston Cannons midfielder Brett Bucktooth earned the Offensive Player of the Week award, while Rochester Rattlers midfielder/face-off specialist Alex Smith was named as the League's Defensive Player of the Week.
Los Angeles Riptide goalkeeper Mickey Jarboe earned the MLL Goalkeeper of the Week award, while Denver Outlaws netminder Jesse Schwartzman was selected to receive the Cascade MLL Rookie of the Week honor.
Bucktooth led the Cannons to a 16-13 victory over the New Jersey Pride on Saturday night, scoring six goals with an assist. Despite missing two games, he leads the Cannons with 20 goals and ranks fourth on the team with 25 points.
The third overall pick in the 2007 MLL Collegiate Draft, Smith helped the Rattlers win their fourth straight game with a 16-14 victory over the Washington Bayhawks. The University of Delaware graduate won 22 of 33 face-offs and recorded 10 ground balls while also recording an assist. He has won 83 of 143 face-offs in four games and has two assists.
Jarboe made 17 saves in leading the Los Angeles Riptide to their third straight win, a 16-12 victory over the San Francisco Dragons on Saturday evening. In seven games this season, the former Navy netminder has allowed 13.10 goals per outing, which ranks second in the MLL. Jarboe is also tied for fourth in the league with a .538 save percentage.
Making his Major League Lacrosse debut, Schwartzman posted a 16-save effort in helping the Denver Outlaws snap a two-game losing streak with a 19-9 victory over the Chicago Machine at TOYOTA Park on Saturday evening. A 2007 graduate of Johns Hopkins University, Schwartzman held the Machine to just two goals in the second half while making 11 of his 16 saves.
Selected in the third round of the Collegiate Draft by the Outlaws, Schwartzman led the Blue Jays to their second NCAA championship in three years and was named as the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tournament.
