Harvard embraces the Cannons

By Rich McSweeney, Globe Staff | February 22, 2007

Harvard Stadium's new look helped hook a new tenant.

The Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse announced yesterday the team was moving its home from Boston University's Nickerson Field to Harvard Stadium for the 2007 season.

"We're thrilled to partner with Harvard University and call Harvard Stadium our home," said Jason Chandler, general manager of the Cannons. "Cannons fans will be very happy with their fan experience at Harvard Stadium. The sightlines are second to none. Fans are right on top of the action. Harvard Stadium is an ideal venue for lacrosse."

The university recently installed a FieldTurf surface and permanent lighting at the stadium, which seats 30,898. Built in 1903, the stadium is the oldest in the United States.

Allston is part of Boston. It's a borough, just like the Bronx or Queens.

I actually really liked the renovations of Nickerson at BU. And the best thing was it was T assessible. The Harvard Stadium is a pain to get to, as the 65 and 66 bus lines totally blow.

But knowing BU as well as I do, they are easily one of the worst collegiate administrations in the US, and I wouldn't be surprised if it has less to do with sightlines, and more to do with BU's shifty and reprehensible policies.
