Boston, MA -- The Long Island Lizards shocked the lacrosse world when they became the first #4 seed to advance to the MLL Championship Game, however, the Lizards were unable to defeat the Baltimore Bayhawks (12-2), who won their second title with a 15-9 win over the Lizards in front of 6,829 fans at Nickerson Field on the campus of Boston University on Sunday afternoon.
Baltimore player/coach Gary Gait was named Bud Light MVP with six goals. The Bayhawks used a six goal run in the first half to take a 10-3 halftime lead. Long Island showed life in the second half, scoring the first two goals of both the third and fourth quarter, but Baltimore kept at least a five goal cushion throughout the rest of the game.
"I'm proud of our guys for the way they played this weekend," said Lizards Head Coach Jim Mule'. "We had an excellent game against Boston and the team really came together."
The Lizards (5-9) were led offensively by Tim Goettelmann (2 goals, 1 assist), A.J. Haugen (2 goals) and Blake Miller (2 goals). Also scoring for the Lizards was Stephen Berger (1 goal, 1 assist), Chris Massey (1 goal), Jay Jalbert (1 goal), and Conor Denihan (1 assist). Greg Cattrano, who has played in every MLL Championship Game, recorded 17 saves in the loss.
Former Syracuse star Mikey Powell (3 goals, 1 assist) was the only other multiple goal scorer for Baltimore, who had eight different scorers in the game. Bayhawks faceoff man Paul Cantabene won an amazing 20 of 26 faceoffs. Trevor Tierney made 16 saves in the win.
