By the numbers, Jude Collins’ career as a North Carolina Tar Heel seemed like one for the ages: three-time All-American, All-Atlantic Coast Conference and All-ACC tournament team as a senior.
In the classroom he was a standout as well and earning a bachelor’s degree international relations. Looking back on his accomplishments on the field and in the classroom, many would believe Collins gained everything a student-athlete could from his college experience. But what he lost would be remembered more than anything he achieved in those four years.
Kevin E. Reichardt, a sophomore lacrosse player at UNC, rode his bike down Henderson Street on January 26, 1995, not looking for any trouble. At the same time, a schizophrenic law student armed with an M-1 assault rifle, walked down the same street and shot Collins’ friend and teammate. The tragic death of the 20-year-old Reichardt shattered the lives of family, friends, and teammates.
Reichardt was a model student, athlete, and person. Said Collins of his late friend, “He was one of those people who you know would make a difference in whatever they did. He was extremely smart, athletic, good looking, good friend, and the nicest guy you’d ever meet.”
