01/17/06 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) San Francisco Dragons
San Francisco, CA - The San Francisco Dragons announced they have hired Doug Locker and Brain Silcott as the teams first General Manager and Head Coach, respectively, for the 2006 season. Doug Locker served for three years as the Director of Athletics at Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, California. While at NDNU he oversaw the Universities transition from the NAIA to the NCAA, and was responsible for growing the athletic department from six to eleven varsity sports.
Prior to NDNU, Locker spent 23 years at Whittier College (CA) serving as Director of Athletic Recruitment and Retention and Head Men's Lacrosse Coach. As the lacrosse coach at Whittier, he compiled a personal coaching record of 293-72 in a 21 year period. In 2002, Locker was named the NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year after guiding Whittier to its first ever NCAA tournament berth, where they were eventually defeated in the NCAA National Quarterfinals. As members of the Western Collegiate Lacrosse League, his teams won 10 League Championships from 1985-1999. Locker also served as a member of the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Committee, was President of the Western Collegiate Lacrosse League and was also a member of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Executive Board. In 2004 he was inducted into the Greater Los Angeles Chapter of US Lacrosse Hall of Fame and was also named as Team Manager for Team USA in the Heritage Cup played at the Pepsi Center in Denver. Locker currently serves as Assistant General Manager for the San Jose Stealth of the National Lacrosse League. "Doug is a natural fit for our team," said Chris Bulger, President of the Dragons. "His broad background as Athletic Director, lacrosse coach and general business experience has allowed us to hit the ground running."
Brian Silcott has extensive playing experience as Co-Captain of the Boston Cannons of the MLL leading the 2004 squad to the MLL Championship Game. In addition, he played in the National Lacrosse League for five seasons and played collegiately at Nazareth College (NY), where he was named NCAA Midfielder of the Year and two-time All-American. In 1992, Silcott helped the squad earn a NCAA Division III National Championship.
Silcott began his coaching career in 1993 as an assistant at Nazareth College. He moved to Amherst College (MA), then Wentworth Institute of Technology (MA) where as Head Coach he was named the Commonwealth Coast Conference Coach of the Year. He then coached at Trinity College (CT) for four years, serving as Head Coach as of 2003. Silcott assumed Head Coaching duties with the New Jersey Pride (MLL) late in the 2005 season, before joining the Dragons.
"We wanted to bring in a coach that played in the league and had a solid coaching background," said Bulger. "We didn't have to look far. Brian knows the players, knows the league and knows how to coach. We are very excited to have him coaching our inaugural team."
