The Outlaws staked their claim as “Denver’s Most Wanted” as the team launched their inaugural Major League Lacrosse (MLL) campaign. MLL co-founder Jake “Body by Jake” Steinfeld, along with Denver Broncos and Edge Sports & Entertainment CEO and President Pat Bowlen, Outlaws General Manager Brian Reese and Head Coach Jarred Testa formally introduced Denver’s newest professional sports team to the public.
MLL is expanding to Denver as the sport of lacrosse is exploding in popularity throughout the country, especially within Colorado – where the number of youth players in the state (eighth grade and younger) has grown from 1,256 in 2000 to more than 4,400 in 2005, a 249-percent growth. “American sports fans love hitting, scoring and speed and this game has it all,” said Steinfeld. “Today’s kids are saying ‘we want a sport to call our own’ and its lacrosse.”
Realizing the passion for lacrosse within the state, Bowlen helped to bring a MLL franchise to INVESCO Field at Mile High on a permanent basis. “When Jake approached me about MLL in Denver I thought it was a great idea,” said Bowlen. “It’s a great game and I’m very excited about lacrosse being here in the summertime.”
General Manager Brian Reese stated the team’s commitment to the community, including introducing lacrosse to youth within Colorado who haven’t had an opportunity to play the game. “We want to give the game of lacrosse to everybody,” said Reese. The Outlaws also plan on creating a family-friendly environment for their fans. “This is all about family, a summertime game and affordable tickets,” said Steinfeld.
The team is shaping up to be a hard-working, blue-collar group, which is to Head Coach Jarred Testa’s liking. “We want a core group of guys willing to put the team first; we’ll have smart, hardworking passionate players,” Testa said. “The Denver Outlaws organization is a class organization and I’m proud to be a part of it. I hope to bring another storied franchise to INVESCO Field and look forward to building a championship team.”
The Outlaws also introduced the team’s colors, which represent Colorado’s western heritage and ruggedness, combining Outlaw black and silver with orange, which has come to embody the “Mile High City” since the Broncos first hit the gridiron in 1960.
