with the prior weeks top25 results, it would cool to have to scores that go along with them... just an idea, but that format is sweet.

Shouldn't be too hard. I'll update and continue that next week.

Probably will be plenty of movement when the first poll comes out next week. Chapman, Cal-Poly and Georgia surely move up. Georgia Tech moves into the Top 25. BYU, Arizona, Lindenwood and Boston College surely will each drop a few spots. And who knows what future surprises might be in store for us over the next three days?

Georgia moves up? I would think they have to drop. Yes, they beat a solid BC team but also lost to Florida and Lindenwood. They'll stay in the Top 25 but probably deserve to be ranked around #20. I agree GTech moves into the Top 25. It will be curious where Chapman gets placed after their big win against BYU.

And here's two more unsolicitied cents about the pre-season poll. I actually like the pre-season poll IF people realize it's complete speculation and mostly to be looked at as a way to generate discussion. Please pollsters, throw out the pre-season poll when it comes to voting on the actual regular season polls; it should not be used as a guage or even a starting point to move teams up and down from their pre-season spot because the pre-season poll wasn't based on anything concrete. It's always distressing to see people argue something like, well Chapman shouldn't move up to ranking fill-in-the-blank because that's a huge jump in the poll. You can make that argument later in the season when their previous ranking was actually based on this season's results, but not for the first couple of polls since their pre-season ranking was just idle speculation.

With about 30 seconds worth of thought, I think my top five would look like this:

1. CSU
2. Minn-Duluth
3. Chapman
4. BYU
5. Oregon

So if Georgia Tech moves into the Top 25 (assuming 2 victories over Tennessee and Vanderbilt this weekend), the pollsters will have to drop someone out.

T20-25 looks like this -

21. Utah (0 - 0) [0/0/0]
.......... Will play #16 FSU, Missouri, #13 Georgia

22. Cal Poly (3 - 1) [1/1/0]
.......... Will play #3 UCSB before next poll

T25 W: #9 Arizona
T25 L: #6 Arizona State

23. Michigan State (0 - 0) [0/0/0]
.......... Idle before next poll

24. Simon Fraser (0 - 0) [0/0/0]
..........Will play #1 BYU and Boise State before next poll

25. Texas (2 - 0) [0/0/0]
.......... Will play Illinois State and Texas Tech before next poll

-------------------
If Utah wins against either SELC team, they won't drop out

Cal Poly won't drop out, with a quality win over Arizona and close loss to Arizona State

Would they drop out Michigan State without seeing them play?

Would they drop out Simon Fraser if they lose to BYU?? Doesn't seem fair

Would they drop out Texas, even if they are undefeated??

Maybe they will throw out the pre-season poll and drop someone that was even higher ranked??

Good points ZD, but please remember we don't conference-call and come up with a Top 25 poll together. The actual poll comes from a cumulative points system after all the individual pollsters' ballots are combined. Individual pollsters did not vote for every team that wound up 21st through 25th in the preseason poll. Look at all the other unranked teams which also received votes. We each make our own decisions and Sonny just adds 'em all up.

I can say there is a team listed here that did not make my own Top 25, nor will they be included in this first regular season poll. I will definitely be moving GT into my own Top 25 (assuming they are not upset by Tenn or Vandy this weekend), and I'm not sure who will be dropped to make room for the Yellow Jackets. But I am 99.99% certain that GT gets ranked by me -- OOC victories over ranked teams counts heavily in my book.

Totally agree. When I say pollsters...I do mean the cumulative effect of all of them, not each one's individual ranking.

I think you need another 30 seconds. You are not giving your team enough credit. Is this some jedi mind trick you are playing on us? Reverse psychology? They lost to a very good Chapman team by 1 and beat UCSB. They should still be number 1 or 2. CSU and UMD don't get 1 and 2 by default. They have to play a game to earn a ranking like that.

I don't understand that math, Chapman moves up and BYU moves down. I could see someone in the top 5 who has proved it jumping CSU and Duluth, but to keep BYU in the #1 spot after a loss to a much lower ranked team has to bump them down, even if Chapman is as good as it looks.

I think you are missing the whole point of this thread. Over the years, the pre-season poll has not shown much. People are finally starting to say that the first poll should not be based on the pre-season poll. The pre-season poll is just there to keep us entertained while we are at work and generate some discussion on the boards. Chapman was ranked low because they were ineligible last year. You CAN'T shuffle around spots on the pre-season poll to make the first regular season poll. No one has done anything except Chapman to deserve a number one spot, but I don't think they even deserve that spot. CSU hasn't played. UMD hasn't played. UCSB lost to BYU. And BYU lost to Chapman. Losses are going to happen. BYU lost early last season. And look what two teams were in the finals. That is why people schedule tough games early in the season and hope that they can knock off a big dog early enough to jump-start their season. Oregon did that last season and Champan did that this season. So, in my opinion, Chapman should be top 3 and BYU shouldn't loose their #1 spot after losing a one goal game on the road. And it was their second game of the season.

UMD has played a game and won big albeit against a weak opponent.

I agree preseason polls don't mean that much, but I would say that a BYU loss does, and should knock them back whether or not it was against a solid chapman squad.

A loss this early in the season is good for BYU because they can get back to the top by playing well. But to say a team that has a loss should be #1 makes no sense to me. I'm not saying they should be put far back, but should bounce out of #1.

No one else has done anything to deserve the #1 spot. I wouldn't ever give #1 to a team that has a loss in their 1st couple of games.

That said I don't know anyone better than CSU or UMD to be 1 or 2. Not that it matters much as a lot will be played out by the next poll. I would surely put Chapman in the top 10 though.

So UMD and CSU haven't played anyone of substance but I don't think that makes peoples pre season assumptions wrong. Again it will all sort itself out next weekend. But something has to be done with them for the next poll and since no one has done anything to jump up to #1 and BYU has done something to lose #1 I would put them up there by default until we see them play.

I tend to agree with BB. I don't see how BYU holds on to the #1 spot. If I were a voter I would probably make it:

1. CSU
2. UMD
3. Chapman
4. BYU
5/6. UCSB/Oregon (take your pick in either order)

I take back my comments. I don't think BYU should be #1. I just don't think anyone at this point deserves a #1 spot. And I hate to see a team get it by default. I agree with Catlaxman's top 5/6. I still don't like to see UMD there with nothing to backup their high ranking. I guess they have some tough games coming up, so we will see how that turns out.
