Chico State

Postby eplsoccer77 on Wed Apr 20, 2005 11:18 pm

What does everyone think about the Chico State squad. Do you think they will pull into the final 4?? They beat Cal Poly 9-6 I believe in the regular season. Do you think if they beat Cal Poly and play UCSB to a close game or win in the final 4 that they will get a bid to nationals..They are sitting at 17 right now and it looks like they have chance. Who do you think is in their way??

more chico hype...
Beating a #19 team and losing (even if close) to santa barbara will definetely not send chico to minnesota. Chico is going to have to beat SB if they want to go.

chico beat a #19 team, but they have also played the #7 team oregon to a one goal game as well as the #2 team sonoma to a one goal game with sonoma only scoring the winning goal with 18 seconds left in the game. i think that counts for something and people should not overlook chico.

i agree...they have played some close games to highly ranked teams. what hurt them was the loss to Simon Frasier. Except when Oregon lost to Simon Frasier they moved up in the polls. I think they playoffs will be exciting and it will be interesting to see how chico does. UCSB's squad is the most beatable squad they have had in awhile. The upcoming weeks will be interesting.

All I want to know is how did UCSD move up 3 spots in this last poll? They have gone 38-20 over their last four games. Those games were against Texas, Cal Poly (their toughest game in april), USD (a div B team 8-5), and SDSU. While Chico has gone 53-10 in the same time period beating Santa Clara (WCLL playoff team), LMU (beat SMF), Davis (13-0 shut out), and Reno. Does their win against Cal Poly justify a three spot jump? I guess that is just the nature of the beast. As long as you get your big wins when they count and your losses when they impress or no one is looking. The WCLL playoffs may be the closest they have been in a long time. It should be a great two weeks.

isnt' it like 4 am where you are? Chico is an athletic team, good attack, good D, and fast middies.

when you have a schedule as hard as their's, you can't afford to stumble against teams you are capable of beating. Chico is better than they are ranked, i can say that because i have seen them, but what are the other voters supposed to do?

Wins, or more competitive losses to SFU/BC are turning out to be more important than they first seemed. 11-2 or 10-3 (I dont' count the NDNU game) with 1 goal loss to sonoma/oregon would have them inside the top 13 on everyone's ballot.

Not to mention the fact that they shouldn't overlook Cal Poly this weekend. Self plug: see the Bubble Watch article for a full breakdown.

i think everyone can agree that the loss to SFU has hurt chico in the rankings and they have been working hard all season to prove that, that loss was a fluke after a very competetive game against oregon the night before. I think chico has proved that they are deserving of a higher ranking, but it isn't up to me, it is up to the voters and when it comes down to it, chico will just have to prove themselves throughout the wcll playoffs.

I'm not so sure you can justify a team snagging an at large bid because "they had competitive losses"

If they had one half of their games against their ranked opponents and then lost the other half "competitively" then maybe it would merit some recognition.

Danny,
I'm not sure you can classify the SFU loss and the BC loss in the same category. Almost every team 7 -14 has had a bad loss and BC's came by 1 goal in a game that they choked on. But BC hasn't faltered at all to the same extent as SFU in other games. UNH is 18th in the country and BC loses by 1 at UNH in Overtime on a Friday night and apparently BC is in the same category as a team that lost 14-2 to Washington, 14-3 to Cal Poly, 15-14 to LMU and 11-10 to Chapman. BC’s one goal loss to the number 18 team in the country does not seem so bad.

Chico is a good team who needs to have a big game against Cal Poly who has upset them in past. Then the winner of Zona and UCSB for the finial 4 is huge game for Zona. This years WCLL playoffs as a whole should be very interesting. A lot of teams have chances at-large bids, Chico isn’t out but has got some work ahead of them. The winners of these games will be the teams who show up to play and execute.

so its gonna be chico vs ucsb....thats gonna be a good game. i watched chico play cal poly and it was pretty much one sided despite the 6-1 score. Chico hit the post a few times and missed and open netter. Chico's goalie played out of his head and stuffed cal poly many times. it will be interesting to see how chico matches up to ucsb. on a side note...ucsd got lucky with a close win over chapman. Its hard to believe a #8 ranked team can barely beat a #20 team. Doesnt this say something about ucsd and how they are overranked. I cant wait for sonoma to show them how to play. the final four will be fun to watch. also who do you think will go to nationals from the WCLL now that we know who are in the final four?

you are right, i was thinking more along the lines of BC winning by 5 and it being the only other real blemish on chico's record. I wasn't tring to lump BC and SFU in together.
