What's Your New Top 10 D1 (4/5/08)

Postby Timbalaned on Sat Apr 05, 2008 6:30 pm

With the recent events I thought I would try and put together a new top ten and see what others felt.

1) Michigan - sound thumping of Lindenwood
2) Chapman - beat Poly, playing well
3) Duluth - Not sure of today's score, but doubt they lose or will tomorrow
4) SFU - Big win against the Ducks
5) BYU - Nice win against CSU

Gets Tricky here. . . Some haven't compensated for Oregon's loss to CSU and then the thumping by SFU, Noma lost to SB, but SB lost to UF and FSU, ASU is up there but haven't done much, tomorrow will be a huge sign of where they fit. FSU beat SB, but losses to VaTech and BC are brutal, CU lost to Utah. No one really wants the rest of these spots.

6) ASU - could changed after tomorrow's game against SB
7) Oregon - think this is too high, but SFU is clearly that good and I don't know who else to put here
8 ) CSU - Losses to NR Utah and BYU - also think too high, but not sure
9) BC ? - Got passed that first loss to UGA and are undefeated since
10) Noma - should fall more, but really who else
11) SB - should also fall more cause of Spring Break, but nice win vs Noma

From there I got nothing. I tried to think of who should be there, but really couldn't.

- CU maybe, but needs to fall from Utah loss.
- FSU - beat SB, but also lost to VaTech and BC
- VaTech - some nice wins lately, and look to have rebounded since tough first game
- Texas A&M - haven't done much lately and haven't beaten anyone to deserve to be there
- Poly - not the best showings against both CU and CSU and now Chapman
- UF - big win over SB, next week against FSU will be big to see who has control of SELC, too bad they don't play VaTech regular season
- Lindenwood - crushed by Michigan
- UGA - Tough to tell where they stand with lack of good competition lately and last ranked game was loss to VaTech
- Utah - just for fun, beat both CU and CSU, but all those losses are tough to ignore
- LMU - was playing well, but man that loss to USD is ugly

I really don't envy being a pollster. This season is really tough and anyone can beat anyone as it has been shown (minus Chapman and Michigan it seems). Other than that it is anyone's game and that is why it will be rough to decide those last few At Large bids. There are a bunch of teams that can say they have a shot in the tourney cause they do, but only 3 or 4 will get those at large bids to prove it. There will be a few teams left out and it is going to be tough cause you will never know. Start making your runs now teams cause you need that momentum going into Dallas.

After the Top 6, I don't even want to try and rank these teams. I think ASU should be 6, because their only defeats are against BYU and Michigan.

After that...oh boy. UCSB winning handedly against SSU just complicates thing even more. I could only imagine if CSU beat BYU, pollsters may feel somewhat relieved that BYU won. Many of the Top 15 teams have losses against Unranked teams or teams much lower then them.
Oregon should stay high-ish, because even though they just lost to SFU by 8, it was on the road against obviously a very good team. But then they lost to CSU who lost Utah, BYU etc.

As for SFU/BYU, I don't know who to have 4th and 5th. BYU has 3 losses and SFU has 1, but it was to BYU by 6. But then that was early in the season and on the road. Both teams have clearly made strides.

so for me

1.Michigan
2.Chapman
3.Duluth
4. SFU/BYU
5. SFU/BYU
6. ASU
7 - 25. good luck

This seems like another good example of the folly of putting significant weight on simply counting W's and L's. Yes, BYU has lost 3 (all relatively closely) -- to Chapman, Michigan, and Duluth, those who everyone has ranked above them as the top 3 (although Duluth lost to CSU...) -- and beat a handful of the other top several teams, all by substantial margins except for ASU. I believe no one else has played even two of those top three (other than Arizona, who lost both, as well as losing to a lot of others), so comparing on the simple basis of # of losses seems rather incomplete at best. SFU hasn't even played any of the top few (except BYU, whom they lost to handily as mentioned). Who of the top several others has SFU beat? SFU beat SSU (by 1), who hasn't played any of the top few either (unless you count CSU who they squeaked by) and lost big to UCSB; and SFU beat Oregon, who hasn't played anybody else in the top several (except losing to CSU). (Nothing against any of these, all good teams, lots of parity, etc., just still rather unproven against the top few...so relative lack of losses isn't so significant.)

I think you have to drop CSU for losing to Utah, despite their win over Oregon.

And you have to drop Oregon for losing to SFU and CSU.

You have to move SFU up for beating Oregon.

And BYU moves up by virtue of UO and CSU heading down.

The top three stay the same.

I think the top 5 is:

Michigan
Chapman
UMD
BYU
SFU

After that it gets a little tricky...

ASU beat UCSB so they should move up.

Sonoma lost handily to UCSB, so they're headed down.

UCSB.. I don't know what the heck they're up to. They should hang out with Utah, I bet they'd have a lot in common. They have to drop for the Florida debacle.. but they crushed Sonoma. Hmmm..

My 6-8 is:

ASU
CSU
UO

After that it's tough. Seems no one wants to stake a claim to any of the spots 9-16.

Here goes, my 9-16:

BC
Florida
UCSB
Sonoma
Florida State
Lindenwood
Cal Poly
Utah

Glad I'm not a poll voter...

Edit: I inadvertently slighted Boston College. They're in there now.

this year is ridiculous.

nhoskins, those rankings look pretty legit to me.

i have a couple issues though.

utah, even with all their losses, should indeed be ranked—but not in the top 16. not yet anyways. lindenwood should be lucky to be ranked come next poll. why do they always stay in that 12-15 range? i think they get the benefit of the doubt because their uniforms look good. anyhoo, these two play each other pretty soon. that should sort out some issues.

good luck voters.

Nothing exciting to offer here. . .I think most of the top-10s look pretty similar. I give BYU the edge over SFU (they did handle SFU early in the season) and CSU the nod over Oregon for beating them last week (despite the loss to Utah). . .

1. Michigan
2. Chapman
3. Duluth
4. BYU
5. SFU
6. ASU
7. CSU
8. Oregon
9. UCSB
10. Sonoma

Why would you have Florida St. over Va. Tech? VT just beat FSU last w/e and their only loss was their first game of the season.

Why does Lindenwood keep showing up in this range? They haven't beaten anyone that's ranked in the Top 15. They just lost to Michigan (big) & unranked Michigan St. Why do they keep getting votes?

FSU beat UCSB. VT is yet to be anyone other than FSU, which they did by 1. I think FSU is the better team because of the UCSB win despite the VT loss. VT just hasn't beaten any to warrant a higher ranking.

Thanks Catlaxman.. I couldn't find the score for that Michigan State game on the scores link yet. Should have checked the forums for that score. They're still gonna be at the tournament regardless... likely facing Michigan again in a 1 v. 16 matchup

Losses to BYU and Utah. I don't think a poll has come out since the Utah loss...plus they slide down 2-3 spots because of their uniforms.

They started at 16 for me - so not that much drop.

Reasons they dropped:

1. Loss to Utah
2. Loss to FSU
