4th Div A Poll out April 5th...

Postby OAKS on Sun Apr 02, 2006 10:40 am

1. Colorado State
2. Sonoma State
3. Michigan
4. UC San Diego
5. UCSB

I'll need to wait on this afternoon's games before I can prognosticate on the rest of the top 25. Even then it won't be pretty. I think my head's gonna explode.

I thought that I would copy this post that I made in the WCLL forum, since many people will be coming here to try to figure out what the heck is going to go down in this week's polls:

The back to back games have killed some of the better teams this year. This is partially why it is so hard to place teams in the polls. Here are some examples of some of this seasons back to back woes by some of the better teams:

UCSD 1 goal win over Arizona THEN UCSD one goal loss to ASU

Chapman 4 goal win over Oregon State THEN Chapman one goal loss to LMU

Oregon 1 goal loss against Sonoma THEN Oregon 1 goal loss to Cal Poly, THEN Cal Poly loses to Sonoma by 5 the next day.

Arizona 2 goal win over BYU THEN the 3rd game in a row, they lose to Utah by 1

Cal Poly 1 goal loss to Utah, THEN the 3rd game in a row, they lose to Duluth by 1 goal.

Utah beats Cal Poly by 1, THEN they lose to Duluth by 1 the next day.

In february, Utah loses by 1 to Chico State THEN they lose to Chapman by 7 the next day

BYU loses to UCSB by 1 THEN they lose to Cal Poly by 2 the next day

There is no better way to say that on the second day of play (or even the third), it can be anyone's game even against the best teams in the country.

Good luck pollsters!

Even tougher now that Duluth lost by 6 to a questionable Oakland, who now has won their first ranked game of the year. I will try to get a list together by tuesday.

Better yet, why not submit it to WaterBoy for inclusion in the Message Board Poll. It's not as easy as you think placing the 25 top teams in relation to each other.

Please do. :)

Everytime I read that so and so team shouldn't be ranked in the Top 15 or Top 20, I wonder whom should replace them.

I am going to start working on this, but I will tell you a couple of things, VA Tech will not be in the top 16 (I don't know a reason why they would be), Lindenwood would fall a few more spots...etc. Gotta researcha bit more...

Dan-
Did you know that UCSD lost to ASU and Chapman lost to Loyola Marymont?
Oregon lost 3 games in NorCal. Colorado got blown out.
Seems to me that when a team loses to much lower ranked teams or gets blown out, they should drop a bit.
You have UCSD not dropping at all.
Oregon dropping one spot.
Colorado not dropping at all.
Chapman moving up 2 spots instead of dropping.

I did not see that UCSD lost to ASU today. Thank you for pointing that out. But I did know that Chapman lost to LMU; however, (note the proper use of the semi-colon :D) they also beat Utah and Arizona by quite a bit, and I was rewarding them for that. Also for the fact that they lost by one goal in their games against UCSB and UCSD. The loss I would be more concerned about would be the one against UCLA, losing by 8.

But Chapman did all those good things long ago; 2 or 3 polls ago.

Well I think they werent justly rewarded for them in the previous polls. My top 20 was not based off the performances since the last poll, but performances throughout the entire season.

BYU

Postby stillwater killa on Sun Apr 02, 2006 11:54 pm

How has BYU been faring since their early season losses? Beyond that, how does the system for calculating points work? Is there an equation?

My main points of emphasis for determining the rankings were winning big games and not losing to teams ranked lower than you. There are some good teams that haven't beaten anyone yet. Also, recent scores have more bearing than early games.

1. Colorado State
2. Sonoma State
3. Michigan
4. UCSB (losses to the top 4 teams)
5. UC San Diego (ASU loss should drop them, but there's no one else to put up here)
6. Brigham Young (losses to Poly & Zona, but win against Michigan shows they can win big games, not just play close)
7. Oregon (loss to Cal Poly hurts, but still, who would be ahead? Close loss to SSU)
8. FSU - hasn't lost to anyone behind them
9. Cal Poly - BYU & Oregon wins, but Utah & UMD losses hurt
10. Arizona - Chapman & Michigan drubbed them, BYU & LU saves their ranking
11. Lindenwood - beat Oakland & Northeastern
12. Utah - Cal Poly & Zona wins help, two losses to teams behind them
13. Georgia Tech - Beat everyone they were supposed to.
14. VA Tech - 2 close losses, but no quality wins yet.
15. Minnesota Duluth - Lost to Michigan big & Oregon big, Oakland hurts too. Cal Poly & Utah keeps them in the running
16. Colorado (8 goal loss to UCSB would be acceptable at the beginning of the season, kind of makes me scratch my head now though.
Time will tell just how good this team is. Only 3 wins against the #24, 25 & 20 team. Can't put them any higher even if they might be better)
17. Arizona State - Simon Fraser hurts, but was 2nd game of season
18. Northeastern - in between Lindenwood & Oakland
19. Oakland - catching up.
20. Chapman - Losses to LMU, ASU hurt more than a win over zona
