ZD's Winners & Losers
(not making any friends this week)
Winner: Illinois with Lindenwood's loss to Michigan State. After some rough and inconsistent early play Illinois has recently put together a winning streak, that also includes a win over Michigan State. The prospect of a win over Lindenwood and a GRLC championship just came back into focus, especially since they will get a look at Lindenwood here in a few weeks before the GRLC tourney.
Loser: GRLC national championship (NC) bid rank, with Lindenwood's loss to Michigan State. Whether their champion is Lindenwood, Illinois or anyone else, they will not be higher than a 15th bid, and face Michigan or Chapman, which would spell an early exit without some stellar play.
-----
Winner: Minn-Duluth with Colorado State's loss Utah. CSU has a tougher schedule, and consistent play would have made a case for them at #3. With CSU's loss, means Minn-Duluth has less pressure to give up the #3 spot, which is really good for their NC hopes. Here is why: Minn-Duluth last played a T25 game on March 21st (a win over BYU). The next time they see T25 talent will be the first round of the MCLA NC on May 13th, which means they are relatively "off" for 52 days. Alot of rust can develop over that time. At #3 they draw #14 and will have a good competitive game to get back to game speed. If they drop they could be in a dogfight the first day, and the rust may cause an early exit.
Loser: Oregon with Colorado State's loss to Utah. Oregon needs a strong CSU, especially since they lost to Simon Fraser by 8 and face Sonoma and BYU before the PNCLL tourney. With a strong CSU they can argue their loss was bad, but at least they played a T5 team close. A dropping CSU would mean pollsters will have to look again at they wins and losses and with closer examination one realized of their 11 wins only 2 teams have winning records. Next, against T25 competition they have a goals for average (GFA) of 7. That doesn't translate into potential wins vs Sonoma and BYU and a high seed in the MCLA NC.
-----
Winner: Florida State for going 1-2 in a 30 hour span of time (losing to VT by 1 and Boston College by 1). Expanding a bit, one would see that FSU actually went 4-2 during a 8 day span of time, and 5 of those games were against T25 talent. The coaching staff must be excited to know they have a team that can be competitive after playing on limited rest - which is what all teams in the MCLA NC are required to do.
Loser: The SELC highest rank at the MCLA NC with Florida State's loss to VT. VT had 2 T25 games on their schedule -- Georgia and Florida State -- and they have won both of them, and will be seeded #1 in the SELC tournament. Assuming they win, they will get the AQ, and will probably not be ranked higher than #13, and thus all the other SELC teams will be lower. Why? Because VT has not provided the pollsters any evidence of their national competition. It is true they beat FSU, who beat UCSB, who beat Sonoma...and so forth. But these are all indirect evidence of their national competitiveness. Don't be mistaken, these wins by VT are good, but they are intra-conference. These wins don't have the bit needed for high rankings in the NC, because these teams play against each other all the time, coaches know the other coaches, they can scout and scheme, etc. All things that level the playing field and won't necessarily help teams at the NC. T25 OOC games is where NC ranks can raise or drop. VT's OOC games were Pitt, Buffalo, Central Michigan, and West Virginia.
-----
Winner: Arizona State with their win over UCSB. Yes, they won the game. But ASU's previous wins were over Cal Poly and Utah. Now they have a signature win in the T10 and will move up to 5th or 6th. That move means (if they play well at the WCLL) they will not have to face Michigan or Chapman on day 2 of the NC. This will set them up for a longer stay, and it will be hot in Dallas, and these guys should be real good at playing consecutive days in the heat.
Loser: Sonoma State with ASU's win over UCSB. Sonoma's loss to UCSB will hurt and place them in the #7-#10 range. This is the "dead" range this year where even if you win on Day 1, your prospects on day 2 are not bright. Even with a win over Oregon and a good showing at the WCLL doesn't look like it will help them move up, which means they are in the exact spot ASU was in just a few weeks ago, not good enough to move up, not bad enough to drop.
Any Others?? Any Thoughts??
