SAN FRANCISCO -- Barry Bonds was indicted Thursday for perjury and obstruction of justice, charged with lying when he told a federal grand jury that he did not knowingly use performance-enhancing drugs.

If convicted on all five counts, baseball's home run king could go to prison for up to 30 years.

The judge also order Bonds' trainer released from prison, finally. The poor guy has languished way too long to protect his famous client.

Guessing the prosecution doesn't need Anderson's testimony to convict? Anybody want to guess if Bonds is even offered a free agent contract now? What are the odds that the Giants knew this was coming down before they made the announcement that they would not re-sign BB?

The real question is, who didn't see this coming???

A-Rod was upset that Bonds had to get indicted the same day he signed his new contract.

As much as I find Barry Bonds to be a really unpleasant personality, and he has been lying through his teeth all this time (which everyone knew), I can't help but feel a little like he is being held up for a pummeling that should be shared by many, many others in baseball, and a majority in football.

But outside of the bad example they set for kids, do we really care? The NFL is just the modern-day version of Roman Gladiators - out there for the amusement of the rabble (me included - and loving my fantasy teams, survivor pools and assorted other work distractions). If "the clear" makes them bigger, faster - the collisions more explosive and better theater - do we really mind?

The naive viewpoint on such drugs is, "Let everyone use them if they want and it will be fair." But is it fair for someone to have to sacrifice their long-term health in order to compete?

I don't subscribe to the viewpoint that we should just blindly endorse the use of dangerous drugs that are against the rules. If we're going to do that, let's get rid of the officials, too.
