I know that as lacrosse players, we are all supposed to be genetically predisposed to hating baseball, but what the Rockies have been doing has been pretty special. I decided at the end of last baseball season that it seemed pretty cool to actually have a team and care about them all year. Mostly, even though I hate Red Sox fans in general (more the Yankee-fication of the franchise, really), it was Boston's fervor over their team year after year that made me wish I was a better Rockies fan - if for no other reason than it simply looked fun to get into a baseball team like that.
So, I decided to get into the Rox this year, following them in the box scores, going to games when I could and just keeping closer overall tabs on the game. It's been pretty amazing that I decided to keep track of a perennial sub-.500 team and the year I really got into them they go on a run like this.
I was always a Giants fan growing up before we had the Rockies here and I played up until I started lacrosse in high school, so it wasn't like I was brand new to the sport. But following this squad from their impressive series victories against the Yanks and Sox in the summer to the crazy winning streak they've been on lately is like nothing I've ever seen.
We are a football country, that's to be sure, but I'm not so certain that anything is more heart-wrenching/devastating/satisfying then the living and dying with every pitch when baseball makes it to October. Thanks to one of our CSU players, I had the pleasure and privledge of sitting five rows directly behind home plate for the epic come-from-behind 14 inning San Diego one game playoff and I'm not sure I've ever experienced anything as unbelievable as that. Easily a top 10 moment in my life.
So, even though we are major underdogs, here's a hearty
GOOOOOO . . . . . . .RRRROOOOOCCCCKKKKIIEEEESSS
for all you forumites! And please, Rockies fans, leave the towels at home. I hate to agree with Sawwx-nation about anything, but this is something we see eye to eye on.

I'm hoping that this long layoff will introduce some lethargy into the Rockies' play tonight, but they have been scary good here at the end of the season - 21/22 and 7 straight in the playoffs - almost a "team of destiny".
I'm hoping for a Sox victory in the Series, but it doesn't have nearly the sense of urgency that it once did. I've said several times "I can die a happy man - the Sox won it in my lifetime!" Everything from here on out is gravy. I'm no latecomer to the Sox either. My early years were in the days of Pumpsie Green (the first black ever on the Sox), Frank Malzone, Yaz and onward. I remember the pain as Bob Gibson won three games back in '67 against Jim Lonborg. Listened on the radio when Jack Hamilton beaned Tony Conigliaro - a black day in Sox history. The '75 series against the Reds - heartbreak. I can remember the exact setting of the room as I watched with jaw-dropping anguish as the ball trickled through Buckner's legs - and instantly realized they were doomed in that Series.
The way they finally won theirs made it so very, very sweet - coming back like they did on the damn Yankees - it made the actual Series almost an anti-climax.
So for the newer fans - GO SOX!! Get your's!
The nice thing is that this is something that StrykerFSU and I see eye-to-eye on!!

Or steroids . . . To be fair, this is the only year I've REALLY followed them, but they've at least been on the radar since they got here. I think if this series goes six or seven games, the country will develop a little crush on this Rockies team.

I went to a Rockies game in late-July, I couldn't believe how many empty seats there were.
And from the sounds of it from my friends in Denver, the whole town is in Rockies-heaven right now.
I did get to see Greg Maddux steal a base in that game in July, so I have that going for me....which is nice.

The whole ticket incident has really shown why the Rockies should not be in the Series. What kind of organization would rather let more and more of the opposing team's fans in, rather than sell them straight out of the park's box office?

Sounds like Florida Marlins fans, they don't go to games until the playoffs start

Back in July, the Rockies still sucked.

Let's relax a bit before we start bashing the Rockies. If you want to bash fairweather/bandwagon fans, go for it. It's apparent that a lot of folks have hopped on the bandwagon, but usually you need some great success like this for a team to get support from the town. And just know that if you want to crack on Rockies bandwagon fans as a Red Sox fan, you're being a bit hypocritical. I'm just glad this team is finally getting some support from the city. It's easy to be overshadowed by Sakic and the Avs, Melo/AI and the Thuggets, Elway and the Broncos (yes, Elway) and even Prout and Mammoth.
The ticket disaster was terrible and the Rockies management should be held accountable for keeping the tickets out of the hands of true/local fans. I'm just lucky I've got a seat to game 5. But leave the players out of it. This group of guys played their butts off to get where they are. Our first nationally televised game of the entire season was the play-in game against San Diego on TBS (SAD) and I'm looking forward to playing a team from the East to get some recognition here. Todd Helton and his goatee aren't the only players on the Rockies. This is a great team with nothing to lose playing a great team with a lot of stars and no more curse to break. Thank God it's not another Detroit/St. Louis series... that's all I have to say.

I'm not bashing the Rockies (I want them to win plus their winning streak is impressive). I just thought there would be more fans at the game.
And it happens to all teams when they start winning.
I remember when the Mavs got good again in the past couple seasons and fans were coming out of the nowhere. I am guessing they wouldn't get excited over getting John Shasky's autograph at a McDonald's in Plano....not that I did or anything.

Haha, I know what you mean. It was nice to go to the 'last' game of the regular season this year and watch the team celebrate as opposed to throw their gloves, hats, etc into the crowd and sign autographs as they get ready for hunting season. This will be a very dynamic series and I'm really excited about it. These guys on Colorado deserve to get some recognition and they'll finally get it. If you haven't watched Troy Tulowitzki play shortstop, you're missing out. This guy throws harder than most big league pitchers... and he just turned 23.
It will be interesting to see how Francona manages games 3 and 4. Ortiz hasn't played first since 2004... Youk is a ridiculous fielder, and hitter. Will he sit Youk for Ortiz or will he bench Lowell for Youk at 3rd? Can the Sox pitcher's bunt? I'm just glad I don't have to watch Wakefield step in the batters box.

Prediction: THis will be one of the lowest rated World Series as far as TV viewers are concerned. The networks did get one break.....Cleveland didn't make it. That would've set records for non-viewing.
