Okay, now I realize I may get roasted for this but what the heck is Brit so famous and popular for anyway? She can barely carry a tune and displays no vocal skills or technique at all. Take away her microphone and her voice wouldn't project naturally more than about ten feet away. My Mom was an opera singer and international performer for fifty years is STILL teaching voice and consulting opera companies in NYC at 81, so I DO know something about this subject!

Back to Britney -- she is an attractive woman, sure, and I guess she can dance. But she so clearly lip-synchs (badly) at virtually all her live performances. She doesn't write her own songs, and seems to choose unwisely which songs she records -- most are the tritest, most boring sugared pop stuff. I really can't believe that she sells millions of records. Are ALL her fans completely tone deaf? C'mon you Spears-carriers -- blast me for my heresy and tell me that the Britster is the greatest singer of this or any generation...

Im taking a "history of pop music" class right now, so I might be able to shed some light on the subject.

Most pop music is made for a passive listener. Someone who just wants some beat to move to and some background music. When it comes down to it, pop music has 3 attributes.
1.) It is intended for a large audience.
2.) It takes advantage of the latest technology/media.
and most importantly,
3.) It is created to make a profit.

The record labels aren't in it to put out anything that will revolutionize music, unless they can make mega bucks out of it. All they want is a pretty face and someone who can move their hips and sell some albums. This was seen in the early 60's when Elvis died down and before Dylan and the Beatles. They put some pretty boy who couldn't sing or write on tv and he would sell albums as the latest teenie bopper, only to die off and be replaced by the next one.

First of all Dan....JUST LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE!!!! Can't you tell she needs help?
I'm not a fan, but I think part of her appeal stems from her adolescent presence on the Disney Channel, where she competed for attention with that other pop princess - Christine Aguilera. Not only did pre-teen girls love her, with her pneumatic figure I'm sure she served as fantasy material for lots of young boys (and men that are attracted to that kind of thing - offering football tickets in exchange for favors...) Just don't put me in that category!
Now she is on the serious backside of her career (and an ever-widening backside it is) and will receive further humiliation when her upcoming album release barely makes Lead status.
People also like to watch celebrity train wrecks; i.e. Paris, Nicole, Lindsey, the Olsens, etc. I believe the Germans refer to it as Schadenfreud. The sports versions include icons such as O.J. and MikeTyson.

I prefer chanteuses such as Sarah McLachlan, Annie Lennox, Anita Baker and such. Those girls do know how to sing!

Excellent post, Laxfan25, I concur with your views -- except for lumping Ms. Aguilera in with Brit and the other lightweight popsters. Christine has a terrific voice and is respected by the serious music industry. LOL I don't think you'll see Tony Bennett and his peers EVER performing duets with Britney, with Hillary Duff, Lindsey Lohan et al, but Aguilera has the chops to sing standards, Gershwin, gospel, R&B, rock and pop. I was a doubter at first but I've actually sat down and listened to some of her stuff, and while her earliest songs were not very demanding she is maturing as a singer and her technique has improved and her vocal range is expanding as she dares to tackle more challenging music. I also admit to liking alot of Avril Lavigne's stuff -- and she plays instruments and writes all her own songs, too. Not a great voice, but definitely a real musician.

By the way, I remember holding the same opinion I have of Brit that I had of Paula Abdul when she first arrived on the scene two decades ago as a singer -- beautiful girl, great dancer and undeniably sexy -- but not able to even sing in key. With hundreds of takes in the studio, Abdul's recordings ALMOST rose to the level of mediocrity. In live performances she was truly a trainwreck and painful to listen to. I would never watch American Idol simply because of all the serious musicians in the world to choose from, FOX-TV chose Abdul to be one of three arbiters to decide who else has singing ability. I guess that Roseanne Barr had other commitments?

PS I love all the singers you mentioned at the end, but my current fave is Patty Griffin. Mostly a folk singer, Patty recorded one album of hard rock (with the terrific "Change" getting some radio play), and this woman is absolutely amazing. Her new album is great, what a tremendous voice and songwriter. Check her out if you haven't heard her!

1) "Change" from the album Flaming Red -- Hard rock and backed by a full band. Great song, I only wish she rocked out more often if this is what she can produce.

2) "Long Ride Home" from the album 1000 Kisses -- Pure country, and maybe my favorite song from that genre.

3) "When It Don't Come Easy" from Impossible Dream -- Not sure how to classify this -- not really rock, not country, not gospel and not folk either. Sort of a combination of the all these musical genres. Just a song that always sends shivers down my spine whenever I listen to it, especially the quality of her voice when she sings "When the last bird falls the last siren sounds..."

4) "Every Little Bit" from her debut album Living with Ghosts -- minimalist rock -- just Patty on vocals and guitar, hinting at what she would prove capable of in the years which have followed.

Start with these four songs and see if you can resist buying her entire catalogue of recordings!

You're right about the train wreck side of this situation. However, if she did even a 80% job at the VMA's she very well could have been back on track with the business side (sales). If she nailed it and had an amazing performance (lip synched well) and looked great (by the way we have a very distorted view of fat in this world), she was off to the races.
