2 things:
1. that idiot deserved it. do not flail your arms when you have the full attention of a police officer on you.
2. UPD and GPD have notoriously itchy taser trigger fingers.

I believe police officers should have tazers but watching so many videos of police overstepping their duty with stun guns has been the reason that strict rules need to be put in place of when and when not to use them.

he was resisting arrest and they were having trouble subduing him and he was calling for help which could be interpreted as inciting a riot.

was he violent? yes he was resisting but that doesnt make it necessary to use a tazer esp. when they have that many police officers. He didnt look dangerous to me. There havent been any studies on long term damage to people who have been tazed. Just a bit over usage of power on the police. Just because they have one doesnt mean they should use it. they have a gun why not shoot the guy? they dont because they have laws in place on when and when not to shoot someone just like they need for tazers.[/quote]

To students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends:
I have received a great deal of communication and input last night and this morning regarding the incident that occurred Monday at the conclusion of a town hall forum being held by Sen. John Kerry. The incident resulted in a student being tasered.
We are interested in learning what happened and are taking the following immediate steps to ensure the university utilizes best practice protocols:
University of Florida Police Chief Linda Stump has requested the Florida Department of Law Enforcement conduct a formal investigation into the arrest of UF student Andrew Meyer. An independent review such as this will make sure the results are objective and impartial. Chief Stump’s priority is to ensure that the public remains confident in the department’s ability to keep the campus safe.
Two officers involved in the incident have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
We plan to assemble a panel of faculty and students to review our police protocols, our management practices and the FDLE report to come up with a series of recommendations for the university.
Administrators and police officials plan to analyze the incident and conduct an internal review and will consider changing protocols in response to this incident, if necessary.
Finally, as is standard procedure, the State Attorney’s Office will review the charges brought against Mr. Meyer. We have communicated with the State Attorney and understand he plans to expedite his review.
I will talk about the incident and answer questions at a news conference scheduled for 2 p.m. in Emerson Alumni Hall.

you've obviously never seen 6-8 police officers trying to subdue a beligerant drunk or person high on crack or ice or something like that. when someone doesnt wanna be taken down, they can be pretty strong.

I don't know enough about what happened in this case to say whether or not it should have been used.
One of the best scenes ever in Beavis and Butt-Head was when they used a guy's ATM card, then went home and watched America's Most Wanted and Cops, which were about their crime. The police break down their door as they're watching it happen to them live on TV, and they're oblivious to the cops and just trying to watch on TV. Beavis starts screaming "The taser! Hit him with the taser!" while not realizing that "him" is Beavis. Good times.
