Franklin man, 59, returns to college football team
He'll learn this week if he made final cut

This is not the same old story.

Franklin resident Michael Flynt finally has decided to finish what he started more than 35 years ago.

Flynt last played college football in 1970, and he is now 59 years old. He has returned to Sul Ross University in Alpine, Texas, to finish his college football career.

He is in training camp along with about 100 other football players, most of whom are younger than any of Flynt's three children.

The Lobos' official roster will be released later this week, at which time the world will know if Flynt made the team.

Sul Ross is the same place where Flynt was a starting linebacker in 1970 before being dismissed from the team after being involved in a series of altercations.

"I can tell you that he did make it to training camp'' Sul Ross sports information director Travis Hendryx said about the unique story unfolding 37 years later.

The football staff under Coach Steve Wright is downplaying what stands to be one of the biggest stories in college football this year.

Glory Days.....

Flynt, 59, making comeback with Sul Ross State University

ALPINE, Texas -- Mike Flynt was drinking beer and swapping stories with some old football buddies a few months ago when he brought up the biggest regret of his life: Getting kicked off the college team before his senior year.

One of his pals asked why he didn't do something about it? So Flynt started a comeback -- at age 59.

Flynt has returned to Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas, 37 years after he left -- and six years before he goes on Medicare. And, he's has made the roster of the Division III Lobos and could be in action as soon as Sept. 1.

Flynt enrolled in graduate school so he can take advantage of his final semester of Division III eligibility.

Isn't he a bit past his "4 in 5" years?

They are not D1, so the 5 year rule doesn't apply. Take a look at their website. If this guy makes the team, they may struggle to handle some of the PR and media requests that will be coming. Definitely not a big-time operation down there.

that guy looks to be in pretty good shape for a 59 yr old. Might be in better shape than a lot of D3 linebackers
