Looking into buying one here soon. What do people have these days?

I know everyone has had different experiences with different companies/brands, but what do people have to say about Sony Vaio's or Dell's?

From what I have read, Sony sounds alright but a lot more expensive where I can get something relatively the same for a lot cheaper by other brands. My buddy recently got a Dell XPS M1210 and loves it (I like the smaller, more portable ones like the XPS).

I would be buying this mainly for work purposes and maintaining my different web sites as well as your normal personal use. No gaming or anything like that.

Suggestions?

I just got the Gateway® MT6821 Notebook with Vista. I've had it for around a month now. So far so good. No problems. Handles typical internet, office, everyday things really well. Got it for a good price. My Dad is a bit of a computer nut and helped me pick it out. He knows his stuff pretty well, so I highly recommend this one. While I've never owned a Mac, I hear that these new macbooks, like the one pictured above are pretty amazing! When I go for a laptop here soon thats the way I'll be looking first.

I'm a Dell fan. I've had two small problems with 3 different laptops over the last few years and they fixed them all pretty quickly.

looks like you will have some good deals from Dell on the Horizon:

Personally we do not recommend buying computers and electronics which are used or refurbished because they have a higher liklihood of breaking, however we know lots of people who own refurbished computers from Dell without any problems. Dell gives a one year warranty with each computer purchase.

I have 2 Windows laptops, a Dell and an IBM.....

If you are getting a Windows machine, spend the money and get a Thinkpad....remember, you pay for what you get

My Mac is my favorite though...bought it back in Feb., and will never buy another Windows machine again....you will spend more here, but it is well worth it...and if you need some Windows apps, just run parallels...I think the Mac actually runs Windows XP better than my other 2 laptops

Frankly, I think with how cheap and powerful the current laptops are... they are almost becoming disposable. I wouldn't spend more then $750 on a machine.

I got a new Dell in January with XP and have had absolutely no problems with it. I like it much better than my girlfriend's Mac but then I use it for apps other than just iTunes and web surfing. Obviously the Dell is not powerful enough to run some of the larger modeling apps I use but it is great for everyday use. I believe it was around $1500.

I've had a new Lenovo (they bought IBM personal computing division a few years back) for about 4 months now and love it. They are the same company that makes the ThinkPad now too. My brother in law owns a computer consulting biz and this was his recommendation. Wireless works great with it, it has 5 USB's (great when you are trying to use it bth as a desktop and laptop) and it has a memory card reader slot built in; great for downloading digital pics if you do't have the wire for the camera. Just my two cents.

While it pains me to agree with the man from SoCal, Mac is the way to go. I was a PC user and for the last seven years have enjoyed my Macs more than any PC I have ever used.

Plus, the new one's run both Windows and Apple formats, so why would you use a machine that only runs one? If you are looking to get a laptop and can wait until Leopard comes out in September, that would be my best advice.

Matt, I just bought a new Dell E1505 and I love it. I'll have it with me at the tournament if you wantt o see it. With Dell coupons found online (saved me at least $400) I got an incredible deal. It comes with Vista, and I wiped the hard drive when I got it, so after the reinstallation and some minor tweaking, I am off and running. No problems at all. I use certain programs that are Windows only so Macs weren't an option, but I did price them out, and found them to be very expensive. My sister's new Mac is incredible, but I don't like certain features it has, and I wasn't sold on the operating system (which i know people love). I think it is all about preference at this point, but I am with Sonny, that in two to three years, you will be looking for a new one anyway, so don't spend too much money.
