With all the recent news out of Philly and Temple/St. Joseph's basketball, does anyone think John Chaney should be fired or if he should resign? He's 73 years old, but has given a whole lot to college basketball. And remember, it took Bob Knight a LONG TIME before he finally go tthe axe, and they still idolize him in Bloomington.

I think from an administrative standpoint the punishment is enough.

As a fan, I am indifferent.

As a coach, I think he should resign. It takes alot to tell a player to injure another player. I understand emotions are a factor but with his experience and age, he should be able to withstand the pressure. I know he feels remorse for what he cost that young man (out for the rest of the year). I think he should bow out gracefully at the end of Temple's season and show the class that we have all come to expect from Chaney. Not one person would like this to be a defining factor in his departure from Temple but with how he is always promoting the game, this blatant act of irresponsibility has shown it is his time.

what about when he tried to choke john calapari while screaming i'm going to kill you?

If this incident wouldn't have happened, then the Calapari fiasco (who was a coach for Umass) would have faded away.

I am not saying he cannot coach.....but it is safe to say that if he wants to hurt players because of un-called illegal screens, then he really needs to think about stepping down. He is a faculty member of the school and should be held to the same standards as his peers. I personally like him, he has the ability to take some of the most troubled kids and turn them into a great team. He doesn't get the great recruiting classes yet is consistently doing well. Overall he has also been a great role model for the men in his program. With that being said, when you have a coach who has been coaching as long as most college kids have been alive, there are going to be incidents.. I think that this should the signal to Chaney that his time is up.

Are we grading him against peers like Knight, Gary Barnett, Rick Neuhiesel, Nolan Richardson, Steve Fisher, Woody Hayes, Jackie Sherrill, Ohio St football coach that escapes my mind now, etc?

or Dean Smith, Coach K, Lou Holtz, Pete Carroll, etc?

all coaches make mistakes, and this is a big one for Chaney. did he use all of his lives on the one instance (or 2 with Calipari, who was not innocent either) o does he deserve to choose when he goes out with 2 demerits on his 20+ year career?

Bill Lambier was on the Budweiser Hot Seat last night on Sportscenter. He was asked if he had ever sent anyone in to hurt another player and if the punishment Chaney received was enough. He said: "I would probably hurt someone on my own--my coach wouldn't have to tell me to do it. As far as his punishment goes, I think it's appropriate."

I could not agree more.

I think the right answer is no, but he should resign of his own accord and take the high road.

The episode vs. Calipari was hilarious if anything else. Looked like Chaney's eyes were about to come out of his head.

Either way, I think it is time Temple tried to exist without Chaney. He will not have a problem finding work elsewhere, and Temple has bigger fish to fry in their entire athletic dept.

It's a tough call, since it was a fairly egregious act he committed. As far as finding another job, I don't hink many schools are going to be signing up a 73 yr old new coach! He has a had a great run at Temple and has overachieved in many ways. It may be a good time to step down.

One thing different in America than in a lot of places is we've never been good at stepping aside with honor, when it is often the noble thing to do. Too often people will fight to the bitter end, embarassing many along the way and still walking the plank in the final measure.

We could learn some things from the Japanese and British. They seem to be stalwarts at taking responsibility and walking away gracefully.

As far as coaching role models, there are none finer in my book than John Wooden. A class act all the way and a nice counterpoint to A-holes like Bobby Knight. Yes, results matter, somewhat, but the way you go about achieving them does matter also.

The peers I was referring to are the professors. If you tarnish the unversity's name (take plagarism for professors) then they should appropriately ask you to resign. (at least thats my opinion)

As for someone else hiring him... not gonna happen.. too old, and bug-eyed.

Hey now, Hubie Brown was still effective as a coach and his skin has all but fallen off his old skeleton body. I find it hard to believe that if Chaney wanted to coach no one would take him on. At least at some lower tier school.

It is bad coaching ethics. The man should resign.

i dont' have a ton of knowledge on jon chaney besides the fact he has been around for a hundred years and flips out on occasion. what exactly has he accomplished at temple?
