Whatever happened to keeping what happens in the locker room in the locker room?

LEEDS, Maine (AP) - A high school basketball coach was fired after telling his players at halftime to reach into their pants to "check their manhood," administrators said.

Why is this "political correctness"?

He ordered minors to touch their genitals in front of him.

I think if he had just left it as a rhetorical statement vs having them stand up and actually check for comparative size, he might still be employed.

I remember another guy who was coaching a girls' basketball team....he got in big trouble too.

Come on, now. He didn't ask them to expose themselves and he didn't ask them to do anything sexually inappropriate. All he did was ask them to check to see if they've got any cajones as a way of illustrating his point. It's absolutely ridiculous that we, as a society, are this intolerant.

ahh

"He then required his players to all stand up and put their hands down their pants and check their manhood," Hartnett said in the statement, which was read to school board members Thursday by Superintendent Thomas J. Hanson a day after the coach was dismissed.

and that's where it stopped being a rhetorical statement..

He asked them to touch themselves, not only in a group but in front of an authority figure, an adult. I have asked my guys from time to time to reach deep inside themselves but never to actually touch themselves, let alone line them up to do so in front of me.

A year ago, before my child was born, my opinion might have been different. Now, this is not right. The coach has all the power in the aforementioned situation. The coach, as the authority figure, commanded them and then lined them up to do so.

I do not condone, but I understand why parents sometimes kill the abusers of their children. All I ask of people is to not touch little kids and to pay their taxes and don't endanger the lives of others. That is it. You kink is your kink, whatever that may be. But don't F with the kids. Period. Much like murder. It is a simple choice really. Don't give into your demons. Luckily, or not, we as a society have measures in place to deal with people like this. Paedophilia is wrong and unconscionable.

I agree that in some cases political correctness runs amuk but this is not one of those cases. Be careful what you idealise. The way things used to be protected a lot of abuse towards children.

I'm sorry. I'm not buying that at all. This is not abuse or pedophilia in any sense of the word. There is no way it extends to that.

This is a major deal. It is not about the 1st Ammendment, but about the safety of the kids. Since this was done by an employee of the school it is a much bigger deal. Liability is such a major deal for schools and its employees that when something like this happens you have to take it serious.

These are not 10 year olds we're talking about. They are varsity basketball players.

I fail to see how the heck telling your players to grab themselves would be beneficial in any way possible. I personally think it's kinda sick.

A grown man told young boys to grab themselves in front of him and each other.

Its not a bunch of college buddies chillin around the crib some day Al Bundyin' it up while watching Aque Teen Hunger Force.

I did a case study on an employee of a school who took a group of kids on a field trip. They ended up encountering severe weather and had to stay in hotels on the way home. A group of boys had to share a room. The topic of the night turned to sex, and one of the boys was uncomfortable discussing that topic. The others in the room kept began to ask if he was gay, and pressing this idea. This one boy left the room upset and asked if he could sleep in the chaperones room. He was allowed to sleep on a couch in the chaperones room. (nothing happened) When they got home a rumor spread that this student was gay and that he had sex with the chaperone. Come to find out this student had a file suggesting that he was being sexually abused, and the investigators thought it was a school employee. This chaperone was fired immediately and charged with sexual abuse of a minor.

The chaperone was cleared on all charges. They eventually found out that it was a family member who was molesting this child.

The point I am making here is that something like this does travel around school. It is also extremely likely that one of the players could be a victim of sexual misconduct. It is sad to think of any sexual assualt as a possibility, but you have to consider it always.

The athletes were minors. If you fail to see where this is wrong, I hope that you see the light soon. Imagine if it was your kid. Your brother. Nothing good can come of this.

The two worst things a man can be accused of is:

1) Rape
and
2) Child Abuse

Whether the charges are true or not, the stigma will last a lifetime. Just ask the kids at Duke or the chaperone in TexOle case study.

I would give the coach the coach the benefit of the doubt that this was not in any way sexually related. However, I think it was unnecessary and inappropriate and the school took the right action. If he had left it at a rhetorical comment then, yeah, no big deal, but he didn't.
