MINNEAPOLIS -- High school wrestling was suspended Tuesday across the state because of a widespread outbreak of a skin infection.

The Minnesota State High School League said 24 cases of herpes gladiatorum have been reported by 10 teams. The virus is spread by skin-to-skin contact. Symptoms have included lesions on the face, head and neck of wrestlers.

The league banned competitions and direct contact between wrestlers in practice until Feb. 6.

The suspension is meant to control the current outbreak, allow time to diagnose new cases and prevent disqualifications at the state tournament, scheduled for Feb. 28-March 3.

The Minnesota Department of Health has been tracking the virus, caused by herpes simplex type 1, the same strain that causes cold sores.

That is nasty. How bad would it suck to get your butt kicked...and get herpes?

That's exactly what Pamela Anderson said...but I think that was Hepatitis...in addition to the butt-kicking.

yeah maybe if they avoided "skinning" they wouldn't have these herpes outbreaks:

fellas, fellas, fellas.........Wrestling is definitely one of those sports that you have to participate in to appreciate. It's probably the most physically demanding sport there is. It takes years to master, has thousands of years of history, and is huge in some parts of the country. I wrestled for close to 10 years and the only thing I had to worry about was cauliflower ear and cutting weight here and there. I'm glad they have wrangled that part of the sport in a little.

Trust me, after attending Iowa and watching a great wrestling program in person, I have much respect for those who do participate in it.

I just don't want cauliflower ear and now herpes.
