After seeing ronaldinho's goal from this past weekend (below), and then he scored another magnificent one in Champions League play v. Werder Bremen, i got to thinking about some awesome strikes from recent history. Take a look at these a tell me which one is best.

ps. I saw #2 of the Top 5 live and in person. cant really explain it but the stadium knew it was magic when it happened, but couldnt really react cuz it was in shock. kinda like Jordan doing the up-and-under move in the NBA Finals.

I really like the #1 top stunning free kick goal with that guy from Brazil against, I guess, France because it looked like the goalie was Berholz (sp?). I liked the way the ball spinned differently where the goalie was stunned to see it hit the crossbar into the net.

The Rohaldihno and Maxi goals were particularly nice because they were both kicked off of a chest settle without hitting the ground, and Maxi's was so far out from the goal. The free kicks were all great - especially the ground view of #1 where you can see just how much the shot bent going around the wall. All are fun to watch!

That number one free kick is why many say Roberto Carlos is one of the best free kick takers ever. The movement on that ball was unreal.

This goal is not as exciting but pretty "sneaky sneaky" by Ronaldinho:

I can't figure out what happened - it looks like the kicker just kind of rolls it in. What did dinho do?

Normally you kick the ball over or around the wall. He kicked it under the wall. It tricked the wall and goalie.

It looks to me like he just kicked it off the bottom of his foot. My friend was a soccer goalie in college...he said there's no real secret to stopping it since everyone had niches. He'd just try to cut down the angle and pick to defend one of four corners. He also got kicked in the head a lot.

Ah, watching it again, the 3 guys in the middle of the wall all jump in unison, allowing the ball to go underneath. It's great timing - kind of like waiting for the clown's mouth to open in miniature golf! Pretty good control also - not having it bounce up at all.
Watching soccer goals is great! It's the other 89.5 minutes in between that puts me to sleep.

Just go over the video and watch closely to see how he put his foot on the ball and kicked it beautifully. A goalie could have stopped it, but it all depends on how you make your foot make the ball spin. That was quite an artful kick Ronaldinho did. Boy, you can see how mad the goalie was at himself!
That is going to be one of the classic video clip over the years.

and it is the fact that he had the audacity to even try it. He was banking on the fact that they would all jump in unison and at the right time so that he could kick it under them. The just as easily could have stayed on the ground and that ball would have been blocked and nothing would have come of it.
