Cool related story about the Big Game

Postby Sonny on Fri Nov 17, 2006 1:26 pm

Fijis run football from U-M to OSU

Santiago Esparza / The Detroit News

Before dawn today, about 60 members of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity at the University of Michigan this morning embarked on a relay run to deliver a football from their fraternity house to their counterpart at Ohio State University in Columbus before Saturday's big game.

Each man runs the ball about a mile and a half, tailed by support vehicles. In Findlay, Ohio -- halfway to Columbus -- the ball will be handed off to the Ohio State University chapter of the fraternity, also known as the Fijis.

It all started three years ago when the Wolverine Fijis had a member with leukemia and wanted to do something to help.

"We thought this would be a nice way to raise money and something we can be proud of," said Yanki Tumer, 20, a pre-med biology major. The first year they collected $15,000 in pledges, this year they hope to raise $40,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Bo was a heck of a coach and a great teacher/mentor to his players. They don't make coaches like him anymore.
