From all the arguments I have heard, these have been considered the most confusing movies after they end. I just got done watching Donnie Darko and was incredibly disappointed. Not nearly as psychologically stimulating or confusing as Fight Club. You were not lead to believe one thing, only to have it completely blown away. I also have a fair grasp of what happened in Donnie after watching it once. It took about 3 times to understand all of Fight Club. Also, all the actions (flooding the school, burning that guys house, etc.) of Donnie between october 2nd and 30th seem pointless and irrelevent to the end result. Thoughts on this?

I've only seen Donnie Darko once and didn't really come away with anything other than confusion. From what I've heard you have to see it about 3 times to really appreciate it.
I've seen Fight Club too many times to count and still find some kind of new idea each time I watch it. Fight Club is confusing, psychologically stimulating, and also very humorous. I'd also suggest that anyone who likes to movie should read the book.

As far as Donnie Darko goes I think it does take seeing more than a few times to start really understanding it. Something to do with sacrificing himself to save everyone else. Like a certain J.C. theme. It's supposed to be huge in the U.K. has a huge following.
By the way overall I do think Fight Club is a better movie by leaps and bounds.
