When USC guard Gabe Pruitt took his first trip to the free throw line early in the game, the Cal student section hollered in unison: "VIC-TOR-IA, VIC-TOR-IA," and then yelled out a telephone number. Pruitt glanced back at the crowd in horror and bewilderment before clanking his free throws.
It turns out that a couple of mischeivous little bastards from the Cal student section had been IM'ing with Pruitt all week under the identity of "Victoria," a fictional UCLA hottie, and Pruitt was eagerly anticipating a date with this nubile co-ed back in Westwood after the game. In preparation for the date, Pruitt had handed over his digits, which the Cal student section recited back to him in unison.

I believe you are talking about this one. And apparently it was a Yale prank to Harvard.
"Before the Harvard-Yale football game a band of daring Yale students donned red shirts labeled 'Harvard Pep Squad' and placed thousands of sheets of red and white construction paper on the Harvard bleachers."

And yes, I was mistaken on the Harvard/Yale gag, but it's still funny.

I don't know if they were the first, but certainly a great prank. Link to Cal Tech story:

I seem to remember something like that in the hazy past.
That was MIT at a Harvard/Yale football game

Thanks! Found it...
Students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are known for their ambitious pranks. At the 1982 Harvard-Yale football game, a hidden weather balloon emblazoned with the letters M.I.T. sprang from an explosion of talcum powder on the field.
CalTech/MIT - they're all the same - geeks!! (but creative!)

No, it was Cal Tech back in the 60s who did it at the Rose Bowl

I can't remember who did it to who, but involved Rice, TCU and/or SMU. It happened about ten years ago. I think it was Rice doing it to TCU. Rice's band goes out on the field for halftime, spells out Rice and plays their tunes. Five months later, the following spring, there is RICE spelled out in Rye Grass on the field's Bermuda grass. Pretty slick.

SMU did their diamond M on the TCU field that way. It was pretty funny. TCU got them back the next year at SMU when they did it with fertilizer spreaders and had the PA announce what they were doing. Oh that was funny. It was also on SMUs brand new field which made it even better.
