The eye of Hurricane Ophelia, a Category 1 hurricane, is located just off the coast of North Carolina, very near Cape Fear.

Luckily it's only a category 1 -- most everyone I know is staying. The problem is the rainfall since it's moving so slowly (they are predicting up to 15 inches in some areas).

When I was reading those reports by the Wilmington TV stations, I was able to conjure images of what it would be like in the Cape Fear area especially the Snows Cut bridge is reported closed. However, I know it will not last that long today as Ophelia will keep churning along the NC coast and then going out to sea.

I agree with OAKS that the Cape Fear area will be very soaked with that slow-moving Ophelia.

I am wondering if the eye of Ophelia has actually made a landfall in the Cape Fear/Wilmington area. It looks partial to me, not fully made a landfall.

They've predicted landfall around cape lookout tomorrow. The wall of the eye is brushing the coast right now. I have a couple of friends with power and internet still, and they say it's been normal hurricane stuff with power outages, trees down, flooding in usual spots, and 6 or 7 inches of rain. But the main thing is that it's so slow, it creates a lot more potential for a long storm surge and just keeps dumping rain. If everything gets waterlogged, then you have bigger trees coming down and doing a lot more damage.

One of the biggest longterm problem they will have is heavy beach erosion. These slow-moving storms take away more than the faster ones. I noticed that Hatteras is going to get hit hard too.
