LOS ANGELES - Comedian George Carlin, a counter-culture hero famed for his routines about drugs and dirty words, died of heart failure at a Los Angeles-area hospital Sunday, a spokesman said. He was was 71.
Carlin, who had a history of heart problems, died at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica about 6 p.m. PT after being admitted earlier in the afternoon for chest pains, spokesman Jeff Abraham told Reuters.
Known for his edgy, provocative material, Carlin achieved status as an anti-Establishment icon in the 1970s with stand-up bits full of drug references and a routine about seven dirty words you could not say on television. A regulatory battle over a radio broadcast of his "Filthy Words" routine ultimately reached the U.S. Supreme Court.

Upon hearing that he had won this year's Mark Twain Prize, Carlin issued a statement saying, "Thank you Mr. Twain. Have your people call my people."

“By and large, language is a tool for concealing the truth”
“I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose”
"Fighting for peace is like screwing for virginity”
“When someone is impatient and says, "I haven't got all day," I always wonder, How can that be? How can you not have all day?”

If you haven't read his books, "Brain Droppings" and "Napalm & Silly Putty" I very highly recommend them. They'll make you laugh and make you think a little at the same time.

For those of you who didn't get to see George Carlin at his best doing the hippy-dippy weatherman Al Sleet or his classic bits on Muhammad Ali or the 7 words you can't say on TV, you really missed something. The man was a genius.

"I am" is reportedly the shortest sentence in the English language. Could it be that "I do" is the longest sentence?
If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little.
The main reason Santa is so jolly is because he knows where all the bad girls live.
Well, if crime fighters fight crime and fire fighters fight fire, what do freedom fighters fight? They never mention that part to us, do they?
Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.
Honesty may be the best policy, but it's important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy.
"The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."
Some people see things that are and ask, Why? Some people dream of things that never were and ask, Why not? Some people have to go to work and don't have time for all that.

"I'm a visionary, I'm ahead of my time.....trouble is, I'm only about an hour and a half ahead."
-George Carlin
He absolutely was a visionary, as well as a legend and a genius

I loved Carlin in his prime, he got a little too dark the last 10 years or so though.

So true. I hate those two. Ruining television and movies.
