Midwest Flooding

I know there is some bad flooding going on across the Midwest.

Cedar Rapids is getting hit pretty bad. Iowa City is also not looking so good right now.

Here is a picture of the Coralville Strip/Hwy 6. That giant puddle on the right side before it becomes trees is the back-up field for Iowa's lacrosse team.

June 16: An angry resident that tried to drive around a security checkpoint is stopped by one police officer, right, while another tries to break his window to extract him in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Frustrated residents expected to return to their homes today but the hazards encountered by inspection teams were deemed unsafe for the general public.

My in-laws, who live in Iowa City, say things are getting a bit testy even though the water is going down.

Yeah, I heard that guy ran into a cop three times with his truck.

I have also heard some inspector fell in a sink hole which was nine feet of contaminated water, created after a basement wall had collapsed.

Things aren't going so well right now. The only good thing has been the rivers have crested in most areas and are starting to go down a little bit.

Here is one last picture from me for now. This is on Highway 1 between GRLC team Cornell College (Mt. Vernon, Iowa) and Solon (its in between Mt. Vernon and Iowa City).

I drove to Chicago from MN this past weekend. It was an absolute nightmare. It took about 4 hours longer than normal. I saw people having to use the side of the road for a bathroom. I saw one truck driver start to clean the cab of his vehicle. He actually got out of the vehicle to start cleaning. My favorite though was the kids that sold water and sodas on the side of road of the detour. I was quite proud of those opportunists.

I-80 is closed to local traffic only between Davenport and Des Moines. The detour takes you north to Dubuque and then west to I-35.

Friday night, my oldest and I went to the baseball in Davenport. Though the stadium sits on the river, the flood wall and sand bags enable the game to go on, while the lots outside were under 10 feet of water. We tried to go yesterday and the game was cancelled due to the waters rising and breaking the sand bags.

The first three blocks of Davenport are now flooded and it will not be drying out for some time.

I-80 is closed to local traffic only between Davenport and Des Moines. The detour takes you north to Dubuque and then west to I-35.

My brother-in-law, who lives in Le Clair, had plans on going back to his Old Man's place in Iowa City for Father's Day, but the six-hour round trip -- via Dubuque & Des Moines -- negated any filial responsibilities.

Hopefully all of the casinos on the Mississippi are unharmed. The Isle of Capri owes me money.
