U.S. Open

Watching the US Open on ESPN HD - man, this is the first major I've seen in HD - amazing picture. Mickelson and Woods in the same threesome - that's fun also.
A couple years ago when out in San Diego I took a tandem paraglide ride at the gliderport right next to the golf course. If any of you are ever out there I highly, highly recommend it!! They go pretty much every afternoon, and the paragliding is much gentler than hangliding. Rode for about 40 minutes for $150 - well worth it for a vacation treat!

NBC's producer wanted to put cameras on the hang gliders but the course closed the launch port for the tournament.

The best part of this to the viewer is that the finishing time on Sunday is around 9:30pm ET. Ebersol is genius!

My heart goes out to the crews on the ground and in the truck.

Knox...did you ever work with/for Frank Chirkinian on golf coverage? I once watched him walk out of the truck and take a golf cart down to the 7th green at Castle Pines during The International and fire a camera guy on the spot because he wasn't rolling when Tiger made a hole-in-one during a Thursday round. That dude was intense.

My favorite line was afgter Tiger hit his approach shot to #18 from the rough and landed it about 12 feet from the pin. The announcer says "Tell Rocco not to check out of his hotel room just yet" I couldnt help but chuckle cuz everyone knew what was coming and Tiger still delivered. The man is sick.
peace.

Johnny Miller is an idiot. He is so far up Tiger's a$$ it's a bit uncomfortable to listen to.

"Rocco looks like the guy that should be cleaning Tiger's pool." -- that should get him fired.

Miller can't ever break 80 these days -- he sucks.

Why is that? Rocco looks like your average Joe.

what does average joe look like? average joe cleans pools?

The pool cleaner stereotype describes a mexican man -- those who don't follow golf could assume Rocco is of Mexican or Spanish decent.

if you follow golf at all -- Miller is well known for saying some stupid crap. He is an idiot. He should be hitting balls.

yea Tiger is good -- but he doesn't win every week -- and there is another guy out there that played just as well as Woods did. what makes tigers -1 better than Rocco's -1 ? cuz he made a put on the last hole? big deal. they don't write that on the score card - it doesn't count for anything more.

Meh. I don't mind Johnny. He spews off with an absurd thing once in a while, but he also has some genuine insight into the shot-making decisions. Last night, he was gushing about Rocco as well coming down the stretch. ("He's the best. I love his attitude." etc.) I wouldn't make too much out of the pool cleaning comment. Tiger's -1 was particularly impressive given the injury, though I do think he's milking that a little - and certainly NBC doesn't mind showing it over and over.

it doesn't matter who wins -- the story is Eldrick and his knee.

Rocco wins -- "Tiger lost with bad knee"

Eldrick wins - "Tiger wins even with bad knee"

gushing ? come on -- cuz he mentioned Rocco's name once? Producers probably told Miller to take Eldrick's hog out of his mouth for 5 min.

Um, Rocco Mediate is American...with Italian ancestry.

I didn't know Italians are often stereotyped as pool cleaners.

I thought the "pool boy" stereotype was a buff blond-haired porn-star wannabe! "Oh pool boy, would you put some lotion on my back?"

I actually like Johnny Miller. He's not afraid to speak his mind when he thinks players haver screwed up.
Rocco just took the lead by one, with 3 to play. Great theater!

Go Rocco Go. Fenjoozlers for Rocco!

He worked with us last year on Golf Channel. A great guy from Pittsburgh, PA. If you have followed Rocco's career he has been close in many tournaments, none as bog as this mind you. Plus he has won Greensboro twice, which is to say that he is better than my boy, Frank Nobilo, who only one there once.

From PGATour.com's bio on Frank Nobilo:

...Ancestors were Italian pirates who, after running out of things to pillage on the Adriatic, resettled in New Zealand in the early 1900s...

As for Tiger, I thank him for all that he has done for golf and more to the point, getting people to watch golf on tv. As for Johnny Miller, he is the John Madden of golf. They want him to say outrageous things but also as Mike Ditka once said to a critical caller to his radio show "It's easy to hide behind a microhpone."

Make no mistake that Rocco winning would be huge. What Tiger has comeback form with the surgery is impressive but it certainly is not Willis Reed-esque, IMHO. Impressive would have been Roy McAvoy winning at Pinehurst a decade ago. Gimme another!!!!
