Finally get to post this - had to cut and paste the other day when they took the site down around me!

Quotes from tony LaRussa on the pine tar incident...

It's commonly known within baseball that pitchers sometimes put some sort of substance on their hands in chilly weather to help them grip the ball. A little bit, that's OK; too much, that borders on cheating.

"If he didn't get rid of it, I would have challenged it. But I do think it's a little bit part of the game at times, and don't go crazy," he said.

...Palermo said he talked with plate umpire Alfonso Marquez about how to best settle the flap, advising that a quick word with Rogers would work. That satisfied La Russa.

"Tony did things in a good and professional manner to resolve the issue," Palermo said.

Asked about the flap, Leyland brushed it aside.

"I'm not going to chew yesterday's breakfast and I'm not going to comment on it," he said.

Both managers are class acts, and it will be much ado about nothing.
What I think will be interesting is how this affects Rogers psychologically, since he has been fueling his efforts by tightly winding his spring!
How will he react in Game 6 - if it goes that far?

Never in a million years would I have thought Jeff Weaver had a gem like that in him. The Cards also definately have something in that Wainwright kid, let's hope both he and Papelbon adjust to being starters next year.

Tough luck for those Tigers but it's a simple game..."You catch the ball. You throw the ball. You hit the ball." (or something like that).

at the begining of the post season everyone was talking about firing him. Now everyone is wondering if he will retire. Whats even funnier is that the cards won with so few regular season wins. Usually they dominate the regular season and botch the post, but they did the opposite this year. One things for sure there is going to be alot of hungover people at work today.

I didn't see any real screw-ups by LaRussa, except for leaving that right-fielder out there. People around MI are getting on Leyland for not starting Rogers with full rest after the rainout, but he had said early on he wanted to have him at home, rather that trotting him on the field in St. Louis after "all that had gone on". it would have been funny to see the signs and outfits people would have brought. Given how tightly wound Rogers is, he might have lost it and charged the stands!
No, the big issue was the absolutely pathetic defensive fielding and throwing by the Tigers pitching staff. They worked so hard to get the lead last night and throw it all away in the next half-inning.
I said they were touched by magic against the Yanks and A's. A cold dose of reality came in with the Cards, probably because everyone was calling the Tigers the faves.
Congrats to the Cardinals for a well-deserved victory and a classy manager.
