2008 BCS & Bowl Game Discussion
Danny Hogan wrote:i understand june jones was just announced as smu head coach
Good hire for SMU is the word here in Dallas. they sure had to pay him enough, though. was watching a small portion of that stupid bowl game last night and they were saying Bowling Green's head coach only made 150K. even in Conference USA, the highest paid were Tulsa's and Central Florida's coaches who were just above 1 million. Jones is gonna make almost $2million.
SMU is a school that'll need a gimmick type offense to even get back to a .500 team. he'll help them some.
peace.

Can all the OSU and Big 11 apologists please be quite until one of those teams really show up for a national championship game, please? The SEC is the best conference. Year in. Year out.
The positive to mean tonight was I learned what it is that the Salvation Army does when not manning their kettles at holiday time: the play in the OSU band!
Good on June Jones for taking the SMU job. Cannot wait for the remake of Johnny B. Goode? Maybe Anthony Michael Hall can play the coach this time? Jones' departure from the island could possibly lead to the collapse of the state government. The AD has already been fired and state reps are calling for an investigation into what went down and who is to blame.

That game was miserable and I hated it. Stupid LSU and Ohio State shouldn't have been there. There needs to be something done about this.

i thought the first half was pretty exciting. OSU came out strong and LSU had to compose themselves and answer.

Conferences discuss "Plus 1" format because the BCS is a friggin joke.

However everyone is on board except the BigTen and Pac10...WEIRD!
I do like the ESPN poll of "Would you prefer a seeded plus one system for college football playoffs?" and 91% have said yes, and 9% have said no out of about 67,000.
It's not about what the players, fans or alums want.

You are correct, I am pretty sure no college sports do a playoff. If D1-AA, D2 or D3 football tried doing it...the logistics of it would be a nightmare.
A college baseball...world series? Bump dat.
A college hockey playoff with 16 teams? Impossible.
An NCAA women's softball 64-team playoff? Surely you jest!
Can you imagine if there was a basketball playoff? I mean jeez....that would be insane. How many teams would they wanna have in it? 16? 32? 64?! Who are these guys kidding? They're better off trying for cold fusion! What about the teams that are Not In the Tournament???
But a system where no one's happy, including the champion and there's always controversy unless there's only 2 undefeated teams (in which case the system isn't really needed)? Excelsior!!!!!!1!!!!one

I didn't get to watch the game, as we had our first practice of the season last night. But driving home afterwards I got to hear the final few minutes of the radio broadcast, featuring the constantly-annoying Brent Musberger gush about LSU as the greatest team in the land and saying only USC could even compete with the Tigers. "I'm not saying that USC would win the game," Mush-Burger opined. "But the Trojans might be the only team in the land that could even go toe-to-toe with the men from Baton Rouge."
What a bunch of rubbish! LSU had two losses, did the teams they lost to not deserve to even be in those games? If I remember LSU also came from behind late to squeak out a couple other wins. Two losses should not and would not keep a good team out of a true national playoff game, but should keep them out of the BCS title bowl game. This year LSU was #7 in the second-to-last polls, then leap-frogged some other deserving teams (like Georgia) to get instilled as #2 and earn the right to play in this game.
This is NOT an anti-LSU rant. It is yet another anti-BCS rant. Kudos to LSU for winning another title. They took advantage of the opportunity they were given. But I am not convinced that they would have survived a tourney that featured Georgia, West Virgina and USC... well, unless they got to play all games at "home" there in the Big Easy, which is very helpful.
PLAYOFF NOW, PLAYOFF PLEASE!!!!!
PS I am also against a "plus one" -- who would get to play LSU this year if there was one? Some fine teams still get screwed by not being allowed to truly compete for a national title.

I think I heard Lou Holtz say that a PARADE is holding up a playoff system for college football, in obvious reference to the Rose Bowl Parade that traditionally includes the Pac-10 and Big-10 champions each year.
peace.

The thing holding up a playoff system is money. All these participating teams and their conferences and conference members are getting a LOT of $$ from the current system.
Of course the shortsighted goofballs blocking this don't see the awesome revenue potential (ala March Madness). Shortsighted example: the Big Ten Network carries a lot of football and hoops, but the availability is very limited in some of their primary markets. Good call Mr Delaney.
Cue Sonny on the character and charm and history of the bowl system...

I hear you guys! I think a playoff would be amazing, especially in a season such as this one. With the basketball model.....Georgia was the team to beat going into the bowls with all of the momentum and savy. However, if only the fans (would a large majority of the fans really want one if it wasn't for the media?) and media want a playoff why should we push for it? Again, are the coaches and players screeming for one? What is really best for the teams and players......and I'm not talking from a financial perspective.
