Censoring math books?

In St. Paul we are using the Everyday Math textbooks. I can understand many of the problems with the book. The students are having to spend too much time with calculators and other math tools. It is getting to the point where I am not sure how much students have to actually be able to do mentally. As a future teacher I have a ton of criticisms about education. I think we are moving back to only doing the 3Rs. I realize that there might have been some problems with our students falling behind, but I feel we are reverting to previous theories in education. If you really want to be outraged think about who makes most of the major laws regarding education, and then think about those individuals backgrounds. Almost nobody directing the future of education has any experience in education.
