While we are discussing overpaid athletes. . .David Beckham signed a $250 million dollar deal to play Major League Soccer (which nobody cares about outside die-hard soccer nuts). . .
Same amount of money as A-Rod over HALF of the years. . .$50 million per year. Yet Mariner fans still throw Monopoly money every time ARod bats in Safeco Field.
Beckham gets a pass by everyone. . .why? Because his wife was a Spice Girl? Maybe ARod just needs a hotter wife. . .

Good point about Becks, Jason. The tabloids in England love poking fun at Posh, who used to be flat-chested but has grown increasingly more buxom through the wonders of repeated cosmetic surgery.
Reminds me of a great joke I heard this year --
Q: How can you tell the difference between Phil Mickelson and his wife Amy?
A: She's the one with the fake boobs and the real smile

You touched it when you said, "which nobody cares about outside die-hard soccer nuts)..."
NOBODY CARES ABOUT SOCCER. The average sports fan does not care about soccer, therefore you don't hear about it on sportcenter or the other big sports shows around the country.
Beckham was brought in to be the face of MLS in the United States. How many people would say that Arod is the face of Major League Baseball?
I am just excited to hear that Arod has learned loyalty to a franchise... I had written him off. I am starting to feel that a lot of Arod's actions or lack of actions are at the influence of Scott Boras (or the Baseball antichrist - as referred to by local Sport Radio hosts on KTCK 1310 the Ticket).

I don't think the team is paying Beckham that amount - it's the total value of his contract with LA and his endorsements.

He is still the highest paid player in soccer and barely played and at a position that does not have a huge scoring impact.
Sounds like AROD is going to be back with the Yankees. Smart move by all parties involved. Hopefully we begin to see this trend of Scott Boras clients beginning to leave him.

On that note, there is NO WAY Lowell was the MVP, it was Jacoby Ellsbury 100%, he made that team go in the Series, not Lowell, how ridiculous, I guess you can't delegitimize the World Champs by making a rookie the MVP, so silly.
looking at the stats from the series, they are almost dead even. However, I believe that is was Lowell's base running that put him over the top.

The average sports fan in the United States does not care about Soccer, but true fans of athletics do. Sport is more than scoring a crapload of goals. There is so much beauty in the game of Soccer that goes unappreciated by simple-minded American sports fans. It's a shame.

i do enjoy a world cup, Premiership, or a game from Spain's league because the pace is much faster. There is a scoring chance each time down the field in those games. The skill is better.

I agree. I follow Newcastle United as much as I can in the Premiership. UEFA Champions League is great too, and it is on ESPN 2. Up until this year, the MLS was pretty hard to watch, but I have to say it is becoming a pretty good product. I went to two games this year, and watch a bunch on TV. It is no English League, but has become enjoyable. It will only get better. I am actually going to buy season tickets to the Revolution next year with some friends. It is only $400 for 30 games. Good take.

I dunno - I think it's up to the sports to grab the audiences attention - women's basketball, soccer, hockey - isn't it the free market at work? - people deciding where they want to spend their entertainment dollars and time?
If kids in the US grew up kicking soccer balls endlessly in the street or park, futbol would be big here, and for teh general public the beauty of one-on-one play is lost on the huge soccer pitch, where the typical view is from high midfield,a nd you can't appreciate individual skills.
Contrast with basketball, which most kids play and some put a real passion into, and where you're close enought ot he action to see the individual moves.
Blaming the fans for the lack of popularity is like blaming the victims of crime.

Does number of goals equal how much money he should be paid? Midfield seems to me to be pretty darn important. Ask France how they faired after they lost Zidane in the World Cup a few years ago??
With that said, the amount of money these players are getting paid is exorbitant.
