Winter Olympics Ads

Postby Brent Burns on Mon Feb 13, 2006 11:19 pm

Without any question, ads for Super Bowl blows away any competition with other ads surrounding several important sporting events.

Just my observations from seeing several ads before and after the XXth Olympiad sports events on TV:

The funniest and the best one I think is the car ad (Chevrolet??) where the frozen guy with the "S" is carried around on the top of the car. He was accidentally knocked off by his buddies when he was sent hurling through the luge track.

The most recent DHL ad shows Dan Jansen falling down in several Winter Olympics. A DHL truck drives by and then stops. Coming out of the truck, the DHL guy starts to trod on the snow and the camera pans on Dan Jansen at his house looking at this DHL guy who almost fell and then did fall with the DHL package on top of him.

Well, both pale in comparison to the "Magic Fridge" ad.

Ive enjoyed the expedia.com adds recently about bragging about travel. The countdown, the mini-toiletries, the glasses tan, etc. The VW gti commercials about being friends with your fast are also good.

I just saw the magic fridge for the first time since the super bowl. so that made me happy.

i was just watching the biathalon persuit and saw a great commercial. Some people from NBC's "The Office" were sitting around and one said "so they cross-country ski around, then shoot stuff, then ski some more" then someone else said "well thats easy. i could get a gold medal. id just sit back for a while, then shoot everyone in front of me and coast into an easy finish."

Allstate ads are usually serious, yet reveal warmth in some ways. In their latest ad, I was taken back by their slight use of humor where the husband and wife were watching figure skating pairs. Both decided to go out to the ice rink (probably on a frozen pond) behind a barn. This guy parked the car beside the barn. Both started to skate around and the husband went backwards and hit the barn. The heavy snow on the top of the barn slid off and went over to land on the top of the car. The result is the car was crushed by the heavy weight of snow. I found the Allstate quite intriguing because it has different elements thrown in- love, humor, seriousness, etc. Of course, I would think twice before parking my car beside something that has a lot of snow on top of something. On the other hand, we tend not to pay attention to that little detail.
