Pro cyclist's choice: Lose face tattoo or lose job

SACRAMENTO - A professional cycling team has told one of its new riders to remove his head-turning face-and-scalp tattoo or stop riding.

The San Francisco-area Webcor cycling team signed former Lance Armstrong teammate David Clinger to a contract in late 2004 and were excited to land one of the most gifted road racers in North America. But when Clinger showed up at training camp recently, team officials saw Clinger's tattoo and balked, he said.

The tattoo is modeled after that of a Maori warrior of New Zealand. Team officials say they are concerned it could upset team sponsors, which include Webcor Builders, PowerBar and Nike Cycling.

"It's certainly outside what anybody's expectations would be. People are scratching their heads. It's hard not to," Frank Scioscia, one of the team's managers, told the Sacramento Bee.

"There have been sponsors who expressed that it doesn't quite fit with what they want to be associated with, but no one has raked us over the coals."

Scioscia said Clinger may be allowed to race while going through laser treatments to remove the tattoo, or he might be sidelined until it is completely gone.

What do you think?

I could see why it might upset sponsors, but they could use it to their advantage maybe. Theyre smart people.

And it looks like he's more aerodynamic.

I think he looks rediculous. I thought what Mike Tyson did was dumb, but this takes the cake. This is like somone showing up to an upscale office to work in sandals, a hat, cut off jean shorts, and a tank top. I wouldn't want him representing me or anyone I'm connected with no matter how good of a rider he is.

Well, all I can say is at least he is not a New Zealand Maori person, or his lawyer might have a case for facial discrimination. But, I agree you could turn this into some good PR for Webcor, I mean it is not like he can just go to the sink and wipe that junk off his face. I think removing it is a horrible suggestion, why not make him wear a Mexican Wrestler's mask; as long as there is no zipper over his mouth, yikes. Or maybe get him a paper-bag with some holes cut in it. To me Webcor sounds a little conservative, this guy isn't taking orders from customers, he is peddling a bike in race.

I forgot to update this thread, but he is removing the tattoo on his face via laser surgery, but he is keeping it on his head (the portion that will be under his helmet).

If he wore that during a lacrosse game would he be threatened with a penalty?

how much of it will be under his helmet - im thinking removing part of it will only make it look worse.

but at least he didn't tattoo himself to look like a tiger and get whiskers implanted in his upper lip (see ripley's believe it or not)

wow, what a moron. I think it could only get sweeter if the laser treatment ends of disfiguring him even more.

I'm sure the Maori would be happy to beat it off of him. I was down there a few weeks ago and looked into getting another tattoo, not on my face though because I am not an idiot. As a white person, you would be hard pressed to even find someone willing to give you a Maori tattoo. Ta Moko is the art of tattooing the face to show family lineage so it's very disrespectful for a non-Maori to steal this part of their culture. And if you've never met a Maori...they are some big, bad dudes.
