Have the dates for the 2008 MCLA Championships been finalized yet? I saw on the FAQ that the proposed dates are May 13-17 but I was just wondering if this was set in stone or not yet. Thanks.

This would be great to know, because most semester schools have graduation around the 17th. Hopefully, it is decided to have the tournament the week before the 13th to avoid that conflict.

Too bad. Monday - friday is all it would take to let many make their saturday graduations ceremonies.

1. We are going to have problems with gradution/final exams what ever weekend we pick in May.
2. No Saturday layover would make the vast majority of airline tickets way too expensive.

if i had a choice between going to a graduation ceremony or competing for a national championship i would take the national championship without any question

try telling that to parents of players... graduation is just as much about them seeing their children walk as it is about the students getting their degrees

You can always walk the following year.

Free advice. How the parents react to it depends on two things:
1. How they view the lacrosse program. If they view it as an integral part of their son's college experience (ie. more than just an activity they are doing in addition to academics), then they are much more likely to support attending a game instead of graduation. If they are heavily involved in the program as boosters, they are even more likely to support that decision.
2. How early you make clear to players and parents that missing graduation is a possibility. If they all know coming in that it is a real possibility, they can make their choice about the value of playing on the team before it becomes an issue. If it's a huge issue to them, then they can opt out of playing at the start so it won't effect the team when it comes up. Be proactive.

Although in the 3 years SJU never missed graduation but every year our Golf Team misses it due to nationals. When my roommate who was on the golf team graduated he had a lunch with the president of the school, AD, and the coach of the golf team and his family and had a semi formal graduation ceremony. I know that probably isnt possible at Michigan (because large schools dont care about their students

), but it is a thought for the smaller schools to set something up like that for their lax team. It would probably help to calm the angry mothers.

There's always the option of walking at a different time too. I'm not sure if all schools allow it or not, but you can opt to walk in the winter (would be prior to with approval) or in the summer and sometimes on the 2nd or 3rd day within other school's ceremonies within the university. You may not be with your friends, but the parents usually don't care a whole lot about that anyway.

graduation-or playing a national championship? Is there really a choice? Agreed with JP's points, it's all in how those individuals view the role of the lacrosse team in their or their children's educational experience. As for most big schools-I would have to assume UM too, graduation ceremonies can be numerous and very long. I read the entire New Testament during my ceremony and still had time to read through Genesis to Leviticus after I walked. To sort of quote Keyshawn-"Just gimme the damn paper"

Not true. They will be televised. Finalizing the deal now. (In fact, just got off a conference call on this.) Look for a major announcement in a couple of weeks.
