Past Tourney Upsets?
Whats the lowest ranking any teams had at nationals and won it all? And what have been big upsets.... like has a 16 seed ever beaten a #1 seed?

The best low ranking team ever was #12 Stanford in 2001, who beat #5 Simon Fraser, #4 Michigan and #? Santa Barbara to reach the MDIA championship game against Colorado State. They lost 16-7, but still had a great run.
Always on point . . .

UCSB wouldve had to be #1 since the winner of the #4-#5 game usually matches up against the #1 seed.
A&M beat a highly regarded Tennessee team in the 99 tourney. i believe that was a 6-11 game when there were only 12 teams invited to the tourney.
Simon Fraser had a good run in the 98 tourney and won it all as an underdog.

We did not play Stanford that year. In fact, we've never lost to Stanford. In 2001 we were the #1 seed, and we lost to the #8 seed UCSB 6-7 in the quarters. Stanford was the 11 seed that year, and they beat #5 Simon Fraser 20-11, #3 Sonoma State 7-4 and #8 UCSB 7-4, before losing to #2 CSU 16-7 in the final. So the 2001 Stanford over Sonoma upset, an 11 over a 3, is probably the biggest in terms of distance between seeds.
Simon Fraser made the finals in 1999, but they never won it. That was our first year in the tournament, and we lost to SFU 18-17 in the quarters. They were the 5 seed, and we were the 4. The year before the Clan made the semis and lost to Cal. Tennessee beat A&M 17-12 in 1999 in the second round (quarters). A&M had a rough tournament that year, subsequently losing to Arizona 19-7 and Auburn 24-13.
I keep editing because I dug up all my tourney programs. I have 98 - 04 sitting in front of me now.

No, I believe that UCSB beat the #1 team who was Michigan that year in the 2nd round, so that would've put UCSB at either #8 or #9. I don't think that Stanford played Michigan in that tourney.
Must've written that at the same time, JP.

What about in 99? Cal was the #9 seed (last at the time) played a first round game then beat #1 BYU (who had the bye). That was a huge upset.

So it was 2000 that we beat Tennessee in the first round. We then went on to lose to SSU in the second.
peace.

Sdsuspect4L, I wholeheartedly agree that the Cal upset over BYU was the biggest upset in tourney history, considering the amount of talent Cal had lost from the previous year.

True, true. Also considering how much talent that BYU squad had. That may have been their most talented team ever.

Didn't Auburn have a highly ranked squad who lost at the tourney?

Your recollection is different from mine, but you could be right. I don't recall 10 wins against Top 25 teams; but I do recall them being criticized for having a powderpuff schedule going into the tournament and many people wondering whether they deserved the #2 ranking.
Part of Auburn's "bad day" was due to UCSB putting it to them after being motivated by some pre-game banter from the Auburn players/supporters. Game was over by halftime; 10-1 I think the halftime score was.

will is right on the record part, however auburn did get handled. That SB team might was under-ranked at 7. They only dropped that low because of a convincing late season loss in the WCLL playoffs to sonoma or arizona.
