New rule for Wednesday

PLEASE LET THE SITE REFRESH ON IT'S OWN TODAY! It will reload every 120 seconds automatically.

If you continue to reload the championship web page, we will investigate you via your IP address and you will be banned from accessing CollegeLAX until the end of the tournament.

Sonny,

I'm not hitting refresh, but I do bounce around between the games mostly because the information on http://www.collegelax.us/2008champ/champ_main.php tended to be behind yesterday (often by a large margin).

Question: if we get the db failed to connect error, or whatever it is, can we refresh then, or will the page still try and automatically load every two minutes then?

We should be fine today for the online scoring of the winner's bracket games as we have all of our internet access resolved at each table. Thanks.

Here is how the system works:

If you hit the page, we track your IP address and what time it was at (this is only for the live scoring pages).

If you hit any page in the system again within 30 seconds, you get a warning message, and your counter goes up by one.

If you wait more than 30 seconds your counter goes down to zero.

If your counter hits 3 you are banned for 5 minutes.

What is the maximum number of games that are live at one time? I can up the "warnings" page. If you don't hit reload, and just leave those pages open you should be fine.

ok... taking into consideration the idea that some people may have more than one page open at a time, I've upped the "ban count" to 6.

Basically any page inside the "2008champ" folder on the server is limited to 6 page loads in a 30 second period.

When people constantly reload the pages it degrades the service for everyone.

And we know who you are!
:)

.....or you can mask your IP, start Mashing the F5 key and then get a solid kick in the balls from Matt and Sonny. :)

Please do hit up the tip jar. The current server was a very high end server about 3 years ago. It did ok until we started having 10's of thousands of page hits per hour.

The current cost for just the colocation fees (i.e. the internet access in a data center) is over $150 per month. To increase the performance of the system we would probably have to increase to two servers instead of one, which could double the cost for colocation.

With my new position, I am no longer able to maintain the cost, or the server itself (well actually sonny paid the vast majority of the cost).

If you have any experience with web hosting, or server farms, please look into volunteering some time to help Sonny out. This is a great site that has grown far faster than I ever anticipated.

For you tech nuts out there, the current server is a dual AMD 64bit 2Ghz machine with 4Gigs of ram. It is by no means a "small" machine.

Looks like its working. I was on the main page, then went to look at a box score from yesterday, and when I clicked to go back to the main page, i got the warning that i could get banned.
