Wouldn't you want top team playing the lowest seed? not necessarily the winner of 5v12 etc? I've always been torn on which way is better, and I'm still not sure.

The only quality I like of having a bye team play the winner of one certain game is that you have a physical bracket that you can easily figure out who plays on day 2. But overall, I prefer to see #1 play the lowest remaining seed, #2 play the second lowest remaining seed, etc. Yes, these teams already got a benefit for being seeded so high, but it's unfair if #2 has to play 7 and #4 gets to play 12 (for example).

So then should every tournament that has a bracket be reseeded in each round to account for upsets?

I didn't think so.

Play it out as though it was bracketed and the teams getting byes won.

NHL playoffs reseed after each round.

Which, given the success of the NHL, should tell us to avoid whatever they do! (just teasing!)

There is much more parody in the league than ever before and the idea to expand the tourney by two teams is valid. In the short history of this league the top 4 or 5 teams were far superior to the teams ranked 10-16th; but based on the games I've seen this year I think it's more likely than ever before that a 10-16th ranked team could upset a top ranked team. At the end of the season it will be interesting to see which teams were next in line (17th and 18th) and I bet these teams will have solid victories over teams who made the tourney.

I think re-seeding is a very bad idea. The top 4 seeds in the B division get a bye in the first round. . .how much easier do we need to try to make it for the top seeds?

Bracket it out. . .and let it unfold with upsets. . .

And that's the way it should be.
