Maybe firing a great coach mid-season in favor of maintaining one who would leave at the end of the season wasn't such a smart idea after all!

Well, when they start the year 1-6, and finishing as strong as they did; perhaps it was a good decision.

This ad may not be real. Illinois has not had a player named James Driscoll on the team in the last three years. Unless a new player is the new president. I find that hard to believe.

that is weird if true, but there is a press release announcing that the coaches are leaving, and why.

What school in Florida is Coach Shannahan coming to?

Why are people making comments about a team's vacancy ad? I don't think that is the proper forum for that kind of thing. These are student run teams and the peanut gallery might not always agree with the decisions that kids make but I don't think that enough facts have come out about the situation at Illinois for a bunch of anonymous posters to be spouting off about it. If I've learned anything over these years on these boards, it's don't shoot off about things you know nothing about or support your opinions with facts.

Best of luck to the Illini and their former coaches.

Shanahan and Smith Announce Departure From Illinois
Updated: 05/23/2008 at 7:25 PM
Illinois Lacrosse regrets to announce that Coaches Doug Shanahan and Vince Smith will not be returning for the ’08-’09 Lacrosse season. Both coaches have had a profound influence on the team, something that will remain even as they leave. The team thanks both coaches for their great leadership throughout the past year.

Doug Shanahan has accepted an offer from a prep school in Florida where he will teach and be the Head Lacrosse Coach. Coach Shanahan leaves to obtain greater stability for him and his family and wishes the team the best of luck in the future.

Vince Smith is also accepting a teaching position, in Virginia at the college preparatory Christchurch School where he will be the Head Boys Lacrosse Coach, Lacrosse Program Director, as well as an assistant coach for the Football team.

The Illini, with help from both Shanahan and Smith, are looking to fill the void and build on what both coaches brought to the team as preparation for the 2009 season begins. Best of luck and great success to both coaches at their new positions!

The post is valid. James Driscoll has been helping the team out for two years now, but has not been eligible to play. Despite being a "new player", he is the incoming President and the post is legitimate.

Any questions, feel free to PM me.

Thanks.

I believe that Coach Shannahan is going to be at Pine Crest in Fort Lauderdale, FL. My brother who is still there said the new coach last was at Illinois. Should be interesting to see what he can do there.

Didn't Stevens leave because of family issues? I'm "almost positive" he left on his own.
